he Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroits Israel
Dream Mission is an opportu-
nity for 20 Jewish community seniors —
70 years or older who have never been to
Israel — to fulfill their lifelong wish to
visit the Jewish homeland.
Through the generosity of Sandy and
Jim Danto, scholarships will be available
to help make the dream come true for
those who need financial assistance. The
mission honors the memory of Sandy's
grandparents, Gitla Laja and Abram
Jakob Moszkowicz (Muskovitz) and Sara
and Kalman Garfinkel, Holocaust vic-
tims who were denied long life and the
chance to see Israel.
The Nov. 26-Dec. 5 mission will be
staffed by Federation professionals. The
itinerary is being worked out, but will
include visits to Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and
Federation's partnership region in the
Central Galilee.
"Jim and I were in Jerusalem on the
October 2010 Fisher Mission',' Sandy
Danto said. "Realizing how lucky we
were to be there made us think about
those seniors who have dreamed of
going to Israel, but have been unable to
do so. It gives us great pleasure to help
members of our Jewish community
fulfill their wish to visit our homeland.
It is very significant to know that these
participants will be in Israel as a living
memorial to the grandparents I was
denied.
"Knowing that this mission will be
led by Federation Planning Director
Linda Blumberg and Jewish Community
Center Travel Director Marilyn Wolfe

Yad Ezra Pantry Plans
Purim Pasta Shake-Up
Yad Ezra is encouraging synagogues,
schools and organizations that offer
a Megillah reading for Purim to ask
attendees to bring boxes of pasta to
shake as a grogger each time Haman's
name is mentioned during the ser-
vice.
After the holiday, the pasta will be
donated to Yad Ezra for distribution
to the Berkley-based kosher food
pantry's 1,500 client families. In addi-
tion to the proteins, canned and fresh
fruits and vegetables, cereals and
other staples provided by Yad Ezra,
the food pantry currently gives out
2,000 pounds of pasta every month.

Those interested in the mission can
complete an initial application by March
1, induding an essay of no more than
250 words about why the applicant
wants to go to Israel. Applications will be
reviewed and 20 people will be selected
as potential participants. A personal
interview will follow before a final deci-
sion is made. There will be a wait list.
Mission requirements:
• Be at least 70 years old
• Be able to walk several blocks/stairs
without assistive devices other than a
cane
•Speak and understand English
•Be functionally independent, includ-
ing capable without assistance of per-
sonal, medical and hygienic care and of
being able to pack and unpack
If selected, participants will be
required to:
•Have your physician complete a
medical form, verifying your physical/
cognitive capacity to participate
•Pay the mission cost (the full cost of
the trip will be between S4,000-S4,300,
which includes airfare, hotels at double
occupancy, most meals, tips, transfers,
transportation, sites, etc.). If unable to
pay the full cost of the mission, scholar-
ship assistance is available pursuant to a
financial assessment.
• Complete a mission application and
all required waivers
•Provide verification of health insur-
ance coverage for injuries/hospitaliza-
tions when out of the United States
•Contribute to Federation's 2012
Annual Campaign
For more information or for an appli-
cation, call Linda Blumberg at (248) 203-
1468 or email Blumberg@jfind.org . 1-1

Purim, a holiday known for giving
gifts for the poor (Matanot L'evyonim)
begins Wednesday, March 7. To date,
synagogues and organizations from
across the community are planning
on participating.
Because of the continued high-
unemployment rate in Michigan, 5
percent of the Jewish Metro Detroit
population relies on Yad Ezra for
assistance.
Yad Ezra also is offering the sale
of Purim Tribute cards available for
mailing. A Purim tribute package
includes six cards and plain envelopes
for $36. Purchases can be made online
at www.yadezra.org or by calling
(248) 548-3663.
