MORRIS HARRY "MICKEY"
ARNOWITZ, 90, of San Anselmo, Calif.,
formerly of Oak Park, died Jan. 8, 2012.
He was born into a small Orthodox
Jewish community in Detroit to parents
who were adamant about human rights, a
focus that would influence his later years.
During World War II, he enlisted in the
Navy and saw combat action in the Pacific.
When he returned home, he continued to
pursue the love of his life, Harriet Welton,
who, after dozens of proposals, would
eventually consent to become his wife.
Harriet was an early feminist, political
and civil rights activist, receiving many
honors for her work. Mickey and Harriet
were married for 49 years until her death
in 1993. During that time, they lived in
Detroit and then, in 1952, became active
members of a new community in the
Detroit suburb of Oak Park, where they
raised four children.
Mr. Arnowitz was a union electrician,
a dedicated 50-year member of Kiwanis,
a lieutenant governor of Kiwanis in
Michigan, a biblical scholar, an active
member of Congregation Beth Shalom,
member of many community organiza-
tions and an unrelenting civil rights and
gay rights activist, including being a
Michigan ACLU Board Member.
He continued Harriet's efforts for social
justice in both the civil rights movement
(Oakland County of Human Rights) and
LGBT rights movement (PFLAG and the
Triangle Foundation). He will be remem-
bered for his passionate support of human
rights, love of his family, wisdom and big
heart.
Mr. Arnowitz is survived by his daugh-
ter and son-in-law, Rosanne and Dick
Hoeft of Saline; sons and daughters-
in-law, Jonathan Arnowitz of California
and partner, Minne, David and Debby
Arnowitz of California, Burt and Joyce
Arnowitz of California; grandchildren,

He was the beloved husband of the late
Harriet Arnowitz.

KENNY RUBIN
We never knew 28 years ago the sorrow that life still brings.
The bitter grief, the shock severe
to lose our beloved son one so young and so dear.
We think of you in silence and often speak your name
all we have now is memories, and your picture in a frame.
No one will ever know the sorrow we still feel, to hear your voice,
to see you smile, and talk with you awhile!
Love always,
Mom & Dad (Ellie & Nate Rubin)
