INAUGURAL SEASON • 2011-2012
WRCJ 90.9 FM
presents the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
"The drama explodes in ways that are
unexpected as Mamet plots usually do:'
says Bremer, recalling Mamet's film The
Verdict, starring Paul Newman. "Besides
the issue of black and white, the title
suggests another important kind of race
issue — what is needed to be the best
and win a race.
"We have a top-notch cast to bring
this all across:'
Lisa Lauren Smith plays Susan, a
junior and pivotal attorney in the firm.
Smith, the recipient of two Best Female
Actor Awards from Detroit Repertory
Theater and the Rogue Critic theater
blog, has appeared in Something Wicked
This Way Comes and The Piano Lesson,
written the book Simple Wisdom and
released an album, Rock Steady.
The accused, Charles Strickland, is
played by John Manfredi, who recently
formed Etico Productions to develop all
kinds of entertainment projects.
Cast in Michigan-made films (Real
Steel, Ides of March, Game of Death
and the upcoming Oz: The Great and
Powerful), Manfredi has been seen in
numerous local productions, ranging
from Oedipus Rex to Torch Song Trilogy.
Steve Blackwood, in the role of attor-
ney Jack Lawson, played Bart on the
soap Days of Our Lives and is making
his JET debut. An Oakland University
theater graduate, he recently appeared
at Meadow Brook Theatre in Boeing
Boeing and Ding Dong and was in the
Michigan-made films Machine Gun
Preacher and Cedar Rapids.
Harold Hogan (attorney Henry
Brown), a workshop leader at Detroit
Repertory Theater, recently showed
his acting skills there in Engagement
Rules and was chosen for the company's
Subscribers Award as best supporting
actor in A Lesson Before Dying. His last
JET production was Let Him In.
"What I love about Mamet is his abil-
ity to capture the way people actually
talk," says Bremer, cautioning that the
language in Race is very explicit.
"There are laughs in the play without
fluff, and the dramatic action brought
the New York version a Tony nomina-
tion:"

"There has been no greater influ-

Holocaust survivors:' Doi finan says.
When she was younger, she was
haunted by nightmares of the family

Wonder, too, is central to Doi finan's

mystified: "How can you look someone
