delivered gifts for the Jimmy's Kids

eturning to its more familiar format after an
abbreviated and smaller program last year
when Dec. 25 fell on Shabbat, Mitzvah Day
2011 sent more than 800 volunteers to some 40 sites
throughout Metro Detroit on Christmas Day.
The volunteers relieved Christian staff and volunteers
at the nonprofit agencies so they could spend the holi-
day at home with their families.
Coordinated by the Jewish Community Relations
Council, large groups from area synagogues, includ-
ing Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Temple Beth El,
Congregation Beth Shalom and Temple Israel, among
others, delivered presents to families of the Jimmy's
Kids charity, visited seniors at the Methodist Children's
Home, helped out at Almost Home animal shelter,
entertained residents at JARC homes and served meals
at several soup kitchens.
Joining in this year were 50 teens from the JServe
volunteer group and about 100 Muslim volunteers who
worked alongside Jewish volunteers in an interfaith
effort at several locations.
"Our family spent the morning delivering presents for
Jimmy's Kids',' said Diana Bradley of West Bloomfield.
"This was such a wonderful, eye-opening experience for
our children as well as ourselves. It really brings home
that we each need to be grateful for all that we have and
just puts life in general into perspective. We can't wait
until next Christmas!" ❑
