of our history our understandings of
God, Torah and Israel have changed,
developed and evolved, we encourage
our members to explore and expand
their Jewish identities both spiritu-
ally and experientially," Klein said.
"We proudly welcome all Jews into
our congregational family, embracing
non-traditional and interfaith fami-
lies, inclusively encouraging all our
families to fully participate in the life
of the congregation.
"And I am particularly pleased that
throughout our 60-year history in Oak
Park, we have been and continue to be a
family-friendly Reform synagogue with
a strong emphasis on adult and child
education, social action activity in the
community and inclusive, personally
meaningful worship experiences."

Special Events
For this Erev Shabbat, the congregation
and clergy have developed a unique
anniversary siddur, combining the best
of the past prayer books and songs.
Kick-off weekend also includes an
entertaining Havdalah on Saturday
and a Jewish Antiques Road Show on
Sunday.
The 60th year also allows the congre-
gation and religious school families to
learn and connect l'dor v'dor (genera-
tion to generation), said Temple Emanu-
El's Educational Director Geoff Berdy.
"We celebrate 60, but inspired by the
Jewish notion of 'until 120; this is our
opportunity to envision and invest in
the Jewish future. Students, parents and
grandparents will experience tikkun
olam while 'Honoring Our Elders' with
a Jewish Antiques Road Show:' Berdy
said. "We will share family Judaica we
love and review Jewish involvement in
the civil rights movement. This year also
features a school-wide family mosaic
the project with artist Mary Gilhuly and
a temple time capsule and expansive
photo collage spearheaded by teacher
Liz Fallert."
Other 2012 anniversary events will
include reunion concerts, a "Legacy of
Leadership Gala" honoring Glenn and
Kim Leibowitz, events for past and pres-
ent nursery and religious school attend-
ees, and an annual wine-tasting event,
Casino and Vino, on Jan. 28.
Temple Emanu-El President Mitchell
R. Meisner said, "Rabbi Klein men-
tioned our role as an anchor for south-
east Oakland County, in Huntington
Woods, Oak Park, Berkley, Royal Oak,
Pleasant Ridge, Ferndale and nearby
communities. As this area grows and
changes, we are also growing and
changing, and we are celebrating our
60th anniversary as a marker in time as
well as place. We are halfway to 120!"
