COMING TO ADAT SHALOM THIS MONTH.

Adat Shalom is very pleased to present

ANA

DR. DEBORAH LIPSTADT

nEBORAH LIPSTADT made international head-
lines with her courageous defense and re-
sounding defeat of a 1998 libel suit brought by
Holocaust denier David Irving. The suit followed the
publication of Dr. Lipstadt's Denying the Holocaust:
The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory. The
book was the first full length study of those who at-
tempt to deny the Holocaust. Its publication re-
ceived simultaneous front page reviews in the New
York Times and the Washington Post. She then
went on to detail the hving trial in History on Trial: My Day in Court with
a Holocaust Denier.
Dr. Lipstadt will speak at Adat Shalom about her newest book,
The Eichmann Trial, which was published in commemoration of the 50th
anniversary of the Eichmann trial. It has been called "a penetrating and
authoritative dissection of a landmark case and its after effects" and is
described as "a powerfully written testimony to our ongoing fascination
with the proceedings, the resonance of survivor tales, and how both
changed our understanding of justice after atrocity." The Eichmann Trial
offers a legal, moral and political framework for coming to terms with
unfathomable evil and those who perpetrate it. The New York Times Book
Review described Lipstadt as having "done a great service by... recovering
the event as a gripping legal drama, as well as a hinge moment in Israel's
history and in the world's delayed awakening to the magnitude of the
Holocaust."
Dr. Lipstadt is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holo-
caust Studies at Emory University. She directs the website known as
HDOT (Holocaust Denial on Trial/www.hdot.org ), which contains an-
swers to frequent claims made by deniers. She holds degrees from the
City College of New York and Brandeis University and has received nu-
merous Honorary Doctorates from universities throughout the world.
