Letters Of Love
Adat Shalom's Scouts and students brightened Chanukah for military members.
F
or the third year, 300 Chanukah
cards have been sent by the corn-
munity to Jewish men and women
serving in the U.S. Armed Forces overseas.
Thanks to major efforts by students at
Beth Achim Religious School at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, clients of Wells Fargo Advisors
in Farmington Hills, Boy Scout Troop
364 (chartered by the Adat Shalom Men's
Club) and Cub Scout Pack 613 (chartered
by the United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism), Jewish military members received
cards in time for Chanukah.
The Jewish Chaplains Council of the
Jewish Welfare Board estimates more
than 10,000 Jewish men and women cur-
rently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Chanukah cards were sent to those
serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany,
Korea, Japan, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey,
Belgium, Kosovo, Guam and aboard U.S.
aircraft carriers.
In a wonderful coincidence, a lay leader
serving Jewish service members on a U.S.
base in Europe calls Detroit his home and
had his bar mitzvah at Adat Shalom. In
addition to his Chanukah cards is a per-
sonal note from Adat Shalom Rabbi Aaron
Bergman wishing him well.
Cards are sent through the generosity of
Wells Fargo Advisors in Farmington Hills,
which has a year-round program support-
ing America's servicemen and women. I I

oliday memories are created by family and friends,
and the Congregation Beth Ahm family cre-
ated a long-lasting memory on the first night of
Chanukah when more than 250 people gathered to light that
first candle together.
In unison, the blessings for the candles were recited along
with the special Shehecheyanu prayer thanking God for
allowing everyone to experience the holiday and to celebrate
together as a family.
The Chanukah meal featured a latke bar with traditional
and sweet potato latkes. Creative toppings, like chipotle apple-
sauce, salmon mousse and cranberry sauce, added another
element to the meal. Between dreidel games, the children
decorated Chanukah cookies and shared Chanukah wishes by
making cards for Jewish men and women in the military. —
