"When I saw Norman's picture, I
said to my cousin, climm ... He's not
so bad!' He turned out to be both
good-looking and nice!
"Norman and I got engaged after
knowing each other for only two weeks
... and now we have been married for
61 years:' said Rochelle, who lives with
her devoted husband in their condo-
minium in West Bloomfield.
While raising her three children,
Rochelle also did volunteer work.
"I spent my time helping Russian
immigrants and volunteering at
the Jewish Vocational Service," said
Rochelle. "I helped the Russian Jews
find jobs and also took them to hos-
pitals and doctors' offices, interpret-
ing the language for them."
For many years, Rochelle made dolls
for sick children through Hadassah.
"I also enjoyed volunteering at the
Jewish Book Fair for 12 years as hos-
pitality chairman," said Rochelle, who
was also instrumental in getting a
Yiddish club started at the Fleischman
Residence in West Bloomfield. "I visit
Fleischman every week just to talk
and kibitz with the residents."

Holocaust Center Speaker
Rochelle has volunteered as a speaker
at the Holocaust Memorial Center
in Farmington Hills for the past 25
years.
"Through my talks, I have met
many lifelong friends, mostly non-
Jewish friends who have been so kind
to me:' said Rochelle, who speaks to
groups all over the Metro Detroit area
and has also spoken at schools, syna-
gogues and churches.
"I often ask this question when I
speak to students, 'How can someone
who has never met you before hate
you?' Many people come up to me
after I have spoken and tell me that
they will now think first before they
judge someone they don't know.
"In May 2009, I felt honored to be
presented with an Eight Over Eighty
Award in recognition for my work in
the Jewish community:' said Rochelle,
whose award was given to her by
Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan
Detroit. Every year they recognize
eight distinguished senior adults, all
over 80, who have dedicated their life
to tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Rochelle devotes her life to volun-
teering because instead of dwelling
on the past, she concentrates her
efforts on the present. When describ-
ing Rochelle as beautiful, it's not just
her outside appearance, but also her
inner beauty that shines through. Li
