amilies celebrating an upcom-
ing simchah may be interest-
ed in a new tradition. In lieu
of traditional gifts, families with cel-
ebrations planned through March 31,
2012, may want to consider suggesting
that their guests take part in A Place
to Call Home, a campaign launched by
Neighborhood Service Organization
(NSO), a nonprofit human service
agency based in Detroit.
As part of the initiative, the orga-
nization is asking Metro Detroiters to
donate quality, new household items
needed to transform new apartments
into homes in the NSO Bell Building.
Located in the former Michigan Bell
Building, off the Lodge Freeway, the
NSO Bell Building is currently being
renovated to include 155 apartments
for formerly homeless adults, related
supportive services and NSO's new
headquarters. Each apartment will be
outfitted with furniture, supplies and
accessories, and these donated house-
hold items will help one formerly
homeless neighbor start a new life.
NSO is assigning apartments to
those interested in leading donation
drives, whether through a "house-
warming party" or an email to friends
and family. Registries for each apart-
ment have been created at Target
should your congregants and their
guests wish to purchase an actual
item, instead of contributing money.
Each registry includes approximately
100 items valued at a total of $750.
Party hosts, or in this case, cele-
brants and their families, will have the
opportunity to set up the apartment
they've adopted before it is inhabited.
Additionally, a building tour and event
will be held in fall 2012 to honor all
those who hosted parties or led dona-
tion drives.
NSO is seeking sponsorships of
$5,000, which will completely furnish
one unit and provide vital support
services for occupants. Thanks to a
generous challenge grant provided by
Art Van, the first 25 apartments can
be sponsored for $4,000 with Art Van
contributing $1,000 per apartment.
Sponsors will receive recognition,
including commemorative plaques
posted by the apartment door and
displayed in the building's public
lobby, along with a tribute the in the
lobby and an invitation to a ribbon-
cutting ceremony in fall 2012.
To register as a Housewarming
Party Host or to become an apart-
ment sponsor, interested participants
can visit www.nso-mi.org and com-
plete the registration form or contact
Michelle Bosau at (313) 961-4890, ext.
1023, or mbosau@nso-mi.org .
