Tradition!

On Dec.12, Jon Stewart had a
° I-mo
illa fantasy sequence on the Daily
Show in which he traveled back
in time to check some historical
fil details with Ben Franklin about how
intsi
Th
ilmr the Founding Fathers celebrated
Christmas.
Franklin answered his questions
and then asked Jon how he cel-
ebrated Christmas.
Jon said, "Chinese and a movie."
Franklin replied, "I see, a Hebrew.
Happy Holidays!"
I can't help you with the food, but
here are some holiday-time movies
with a "Hebrew connection."

Spielberg

Let's start with
Steven Spielberg,
65, who directed
two big films,
The Adventures
of Tintin (opens
Wednesday, Dec.
21) and War Horse
(opens Sunday,

Dec. 25).
Tintin, a 3-D motion-capture film,
is based on the famous comic books
by the Belgian artist Herge. The title
character is a young reporter who
accidentally becomes involved in a
far-flung hunt for lost pirate treasure.
War Horse, a traditional live-
action film, is based on a children's
novel about World War I. It follows
the odyssey of an English horse that
is sold to the cavalry, shipped to
France and eventually serves in both
the British and German armies.
We Bought a Zoo (opening Friday,
Dec. 23) is a come-
dy-drama directed
and co-written by
Cameron Crowe

(Jerry McGuire,
Almost Famous).

44. Matt Damon stars as the
recently widowed father of a teen-
age boy and young girl. He quits
his city job and decides to move to
the country, only to discover that
the property he likes comes with
a dilapidated zoo. His daughter is
enchanted with the animals. So he
throws common sense to the wind
and tries to fix up the zoo and run
it. He's helped by a zoo worker
(Scarlett Johansson, 27) with
whom a romance blooms.

Silent, But Deep

Also opening on Dec. 25 is The
Artist, a silent, black-and-white film

directed and written by French film-
maker Michel Hazanavicius, 44.
As the movie opens, it is 1927,
and Hollywood silent screen idol
George Valentin (French actor
Jean Dujardin) is
enjoying the good
life with his wife
(Penelope Ann
Miller) and tal-
ented dog. Then
he meets Peppy
Miller (Berenice
Bejo), a sexy
Hazanavicius
young extra, and
gives her a break.
Sparks fly between them.
The story takes a familiar twist
when the talkies come in (1929-
30): Miller's career takes off while
Valentin's declines.
The Artist already has won some
major awards and is a shoo-in for
multiple Oscar nominations.
The director's grandparents were
Eastern European Jews who settled
in France. He says that here and
there the film (character names,
some of the music) pays tribute
to the heavy Jewish presence in
Hollywood. Bejo, an Argentine
native, is the director's wife.
Hazanavicius invited Mel Brooks,
85, who made the 1976 (silent) com-
edy Silent Movie, to have a small
cameo in his film, sending him a
note that read: "I'm a comedy direc-
tor ... and I'm doing a silent movie
and I'm Jewish, so, really, would you
like to come?"
Brooks regretfully declined, say-
ing he was tired and working hard
on his Blazing Saddles musical for
Broadway.

Diamond Shines

The Kennedy Center Honors for
excellence in the arts were awarded
on Dec. 4. A tape of the gala cel-
ebration, which includes the presi-
dent and first lady in attendance,
will be shown 8-11 p.m. Tuesday,
Dec. 27, on CBS.
Singer-songwriter
Neil Diamond, 70,
is among the five
honorees. Caroline
Kennedy got on
stage with Smokey
Robinson and
other pros to sing
Diamond
Diamond's "Sweet
Caroline." Diamond
says Kennedy's first name was the
inspiration for his song's title, but it
was not about her.
Also honored this year were
singer Barbara Cook, cellist Yo-Yo
Ma, actress Meryl Streep and saxo-
phonist Sonny Rollins.
