hat would you call an event
when guests come dressed
in their finest, dancing is
encouraged and food is served?
In Akiva's Early Childhood
Department, it's the mock wedding of
Rivkah and Yitzchak. In parshat Chaye
Sarah, the weekly Bible portion, the
wedding takes place.
To create personal meaning and con-
nection to this historical story, kinder-
garten Judaic studies teacher Rivkah
Nachlas came up with this festive idea,
saying: "It's a way to take an abstract
event in the Torah and make it come to

life in a concrete way"
Rabbi Tzvi Klugerman, head of
school at Akiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield, officiated at the ceremony
and explained that the chatan (groom),
Micah Adler, 5, of Southfield and kallah,
(bride) Ma'yan Vanderhoek, 5, of Oak
Park were chosen by lottery. The parents
of the bride and groom also had special
duties during the wedding ceremony.
The early childhood and elementary
classes, as well as invited guests, danced
to music, ate yummy food and made
necklaces as a reminder of Eliezer's gift
of jewelry to Rivkah.

livia (Livvy) Gordon of Franklin,
a seventh-grade student at
the Girls' Middle School at
Cranbrook, decided to do something
different for her community service
project for her bat mitzvah next month at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
Livvy had visited Gleaners Community
Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan,
was touched by the mission and decided
that for her project she wanted to provide
food for Jewish families in need.
An accomplished dancer, Livvy has
studied since age 2. Dancing is her love;
when she is not at school, she can be
found at Annette and Company School of
Dance in Farmington Hills. She and her
mother, Susan, came up with the idea of
a dance-a-thon. Livvy encouraged friends
and family members to join her at
Annette and Company for four hours of
dancing on Oct. 23 to raise money for Yad
Ezra, Michigan's kosher food pantry.
Fliers were posted at the dance school
asking participating dancers to make
and solicit donations to Yad Ezra through
Livvy's Facebook page. Livvy offered an
incentive to the participants — anyone
who raised at least $25 would receive a
gift bag filled with goodies at the event.

announced her dance-a-thon

Lois Levinson and Julie Feldman,
owners of Guys 'N Gals in West
Bloomfield, donated gift certificates.
Alex Winkler, owner of Bread Basket
Deli, provided refreshments, and
Annette and Company provided free
studio time and instructors to teach
hip-hop, jazz and musical theater.
About 55 kids showed up, and almost
$1,800 was raised for Yad Ezra, thanks
to Livvy's efforts. Livvy's take-away from
the experience: "It feels good to give,
especially when you can combine it with
something you love to do daily." II
