winter learning opportunity
with Professor Howard N. Lupovitch.
"Israel: Lessons from the Past" is an
Israeli film series exploring the begin-
ning of modern Israeli politics and
the interplay between Jewish tradition
and secular Israeli culture.
The series will
take place on three
consecutive Sunday
evenings, Jan. 8,
15 and 22, at 5:30

There is a charge
of $15 per session, which includes
the movie, light refreshments and the
presentation. Advance reservations are
requested in order to plan seating and
refreshments.
The series will begin with the
screening of I Love You, Rosa, about
a young widow who must marry her
late husband's 12-year-old brother
when he becomes of age.
On Jan. 15, the film will be Three
Days and a Child. Old and new
relationships are explored in this film
based on the story by A.B. Yehoshua.
The series concludes on Jan. 22 with
Flames of Revolt: The Irgun, which
documents the origins of the Irgun,
the Haganah's rival military organiza-
tion and pillar of the Israeli political
right.

Dead Sea Scrolls
In 1947, the discovery of ancient
documents in caves near the Dead
Sea shook the world of biblical stud-
ies. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain not
only the oldest copies of the Bible, but
Jewish texts from the third century
B.C.E. through 68 C.E. that provide an
unprecedented view of Jewish history,
culture and religion.
Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield offers free, weekly lectures
on DVD. The new 24-part college-level
course will begin on Wednesday, Jan.
4, titled "Dead Sea Scrolls" featuring
lectures by Professor Gary Rendsburg
of Rutgers University.
Each week, Beth Ahm will screen
two 30-minute lectures followed by
brief informal discussion facilitated
by Nancy Kaplan. There is no charge,
