n Dec. 6, Gov. Rick Snyder
signed Michigan's Anti-
Bullying law, joining 47
other states that already had a law
against bullying on the books.
Battling this problem is nothing
new for the Dorfman Foundation
Youth Theatre, JET Y.E.S., which for
the past 16 years has been actively
involved in combating the terrible
toll bullying takes on Michigan's
youth.
JET Y.E.S. goes into schools, syn-
agogues, churches and other public
venues with three short plays that
address bullying at age appropri-
ate levels. Through the power and
immediacy of live theater, students
are given the opportunity to see
young characters like themselves,
or kids they know, in situations
they face every day.
In the discussions following the
plays, students have the opportu-
nity to begin processing what they
have just seen and talk about pos-
sible solutions. Study guide materi-
als help educators to apply the les-
sons learned by students in future
problem-solving strategies.
I Was Just Kidding, for elemen-
tary students, tells the story of
Debbie and her two friends and
how words can wound even if you
are "just kidding?' Mean Girls, for
upper elementary and middle
school girls, reveals the devastating
emotional impact of the girl bully.
Word, for middle and high school
students, looks at an incident of
bullying from the different perspec-
tives of the bully, the victim and a
bystander and shows the power of
the bystander to positively affect
outcomes.
For a very reasonable price, a
school or school district can utilize
these shows to be part of the new
state-required plan to address bul-
lying. All three shows are available
anytime throughout the school
year, and by special arrangement
for summer programs.
