Jackie Headapohl Managing Editor T his year, nearly 200 young people submitted their artwork to the JN's Chanukah Art contest, and the competition was tough — there are so many talented young artists in the community! However, one entry stood out from all the rest: It made everyone in our office smile. Dalya Apap, a second-grader at Akiva Hebrew Day School in Southfield, said the idea for a Jewish snowman "just came to her" one day. "I was thinking of winter and snowmen:' Dalya said. "Then I thought that since Chanukah is in the winter, I'd make him Jewish." Dalya has gotten much praise for her artistic ability from her teachers at Akiva, who say that Dalya is one of the most creative students they know. In addition to having her artwork displayed on the cover of this week's Jewish News, Dalya earned a $100 cash prize. She said she's not sure what she will do with the prize money, but she doesn't plan to spend it on herself. "I might buy a Chanukah present for my sister and a birthday present for my brother — I already got him a Chanukah present:' she said. First-prize winners in each age group — Julia Bienstock, Aria Peterson and Micayla Greenberg — will each receive $18 from the Jewish News.
