WANTED: THE DREAMER, THE VISIONARY, AND THE FREE SPIRIT. Lawrence Technological University isn't for just anyone. We want the restless thinkers, innovators, and artists who will create the designs, machines, and buildings of tomorrow. Above: 5-year-old Micah Adler came dressed for the occasion. Next to him is 5-year-old Matthew Shamayev. 0 n Dec. 6, the students in grades K-8 at Akiva Hebrew Day School in Southfield gathered in the gymnasium for an assembly presented by the Detroit Red Wings Foundation and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. These groups have partnered to bring the Red Wings School Assembly Program to 100 elementary schools during the 2011-12 season. This is the second year the two organizations have partnered on this initiative. During the visit, three coaches had the kids cheering, shouting and having fun as they were learning the message about the importance of exercise and healthy eating tips. Trivia questions about the Wings were asked with each student answering cor- rectly receiving a set of hockey cards. Students participated in relay races, but the highlight of the program was a fun face-off between teachers and students during a hockey shootout competition; teachers won 4-3! As a result of this partnership, Akiva received two full sets of floor hockey equipment complete with hockey sticks and goalie nets courtesy of the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Each student received a Red Wings folder and a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan keepsake magnet that lists fun after-school activities that stu- dents can do at home. Rick Kaczander, athletic director at Akiva Hebrew Day School, discovered this program after receiving an email via his network of other physical education teachers. He said the students really benefited from the experience. ❑ If you believe that everything is possible, and that "possible" is everything, we want you at LTU.
