RETIREMENT LIVING

Steve Stein
Contributing Writer

I

t had been nearly 12 years since
Gary Klinger bowled a 300 game,
but as he stood on the precipice
of another gem, a memory was sharp
and clear.
"My final
shot of that
game was so
bad," he said.
"It was, with-
out a doubt,
the worst shot
of the game. I
barely hit the
head pin on
the Brooklyn
side. Luckily, I
Gary Klinger
got a strike?'
That was Feb. 28, 2000, in the
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson B'nai
B'rith League at Country Lanes in
Farmington Hills.
Fast forward to Nov. 21, 2011. In
the same league and house, Klinger
bowled his second career 300 game.
This time, his 12th and final strike,
like all his other strikes, were solid
pocket hits.
That doesn't mean the perfect
game, the first game of a 300-221-199
— 720 series, was a smooth ride.
"I'm the secretary of the league,
and I was running around so much
before bowling started that night that
I only rolled three practice balls:'
Klinger said. "I normally bowl three
or four practice frames. So I guess
you could say my first three or four
strikes were lucky."
By the eighth frame, Klinger was
nervous.
"That's probably earlier than it
should have happened," he said. "But
I got through it. Did bowling the 300
game earlier help me? Maybe. But I'm
sure being older and more mature
helped even more. I never think about
bowling a 300 game. All I want to do
is bowl well:'
Klinger is averaging 214 in the
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson League
this season. He said he's just as proud
of bowling back-to-back 700 series as
he is of the 300 game. He bowled 264-
221-237 — 722 on Nov. 14.
The 47-year-old West Bloomfield

resident has bowled in the league for
more than 20 years.
He's been the secretary most of the
time, he also serves as treasurer, and
he maintains the league's website,
http://brotherhood-eddiejacobson.
corn, which contains a video of the
12th strike of his most recent 300
game.
Klinger works in marketing and
sales for Guardian Industries in
Carleton.

JWI Bowlers 'On Strike'
Bowlers in the Jewish Women
International Bowling Association of
Metropolitan Detroit leagues also have
been knocking 'em down this season.
In the Galilee Monday League, Leslie

team high game (546) and Oy Vey has
the high team series (1471). Lorraine
Friedman, Marlene Lipman and
Marilynn Chaffin make up We're Back.
Sue Lawrence, Cindy Moss and Helene
Friedman are the Oy Vey women.
Sue Leff has the high game (223) and
Sharon Millman has the high series
(526) in the Galilee Wednesday League.
Ellen Minckin, Bev Gottesman and
Gayle Finn have the team high game
(528) and Barb Redstone, Lisa Prentice
and Marianne Pesick have the team
high series (1393).
Three Galilee Wednesday bowlers
have rolled series that were at least 100
pins over their average. They're Leigh
Herskovic (154 pins), Shelley Gershune
(110 pins) and Barb Redstone (106 pins).
Elaine Meyer has the high game
(212) and Joanne Fealk has the high
series (519) in the Galilee Thursday
League. Helene Robbins, Bernice
Yendick and Phyllis Dubrinsky, who
make up Team No. 2, have the team
high series (1509).
In the Israel Zeiger League, Wanda
Fishman bowled a 522 series that was
114 pins over her average, and Janet
Sigmon bowled a 513 series that was
108 pins over her average.
