She's also been supported by her family
and her brothers, especially younger broth-
er, Evan, who has really been "amazing."
"We are so fortunate for our friends and
neighbors; they've been amazing;' Ellen
said. "We're in a constant state of crisis, and
they come at the drop of a hat. People have
risen to the occasion. Its very humbling:'
The family also is grateful to the staff at
Beaumont Children's Hospital, where the
young patients regularly do craft projects
and hold movie nights.
"The nurses are awesome and easy to
talk to:' Shira said. "They are like grand-
mas to me."
Shira started making jewelry when she
was given glass beads by a member of the
staff. The staff also encourage the kids to
make "bravery beads" — long strands that
have special beads for each procedure they
endure. Shira's hangs in her room and is
very long.
"Shira is very resilient and has a lot
of strength in getting through this," said
Ellen, who believes there is an underlying
cause for her daughter's illness, and won't
give up trying to find it.
"I have no other options, so I accept
and dear Shira said. "I believe this will be
behind me one day."
For now, it's her turn to give back. She and
Alyssa already have raised $150 toward the
Pillow Pets, and they'll have plenty of jewelry
to sell at the B'nai Moshe Gift Bazaar.

The B'nai Moshe Gift Bazaar runs from 10 a.m.-

4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the West Bloomfield

synagogue. Free.
