Help Lacey xr Be A Bone Marrow Donor

Keri Guten Cohen
Story Development Editor

L

acey Horwitch of Northbrook,
Ill., is an 8-year-old who loves
to dance.
Just check out all the poise and
pizazz she has in her photo.
Lacey lives with her parents, Laura
and David, and her older sisters, Maya
and Jenna. On Aug. 2, Lacey went into
acute liver failure and was admitted to
a Chicago-area children's hospital for a
possible liver transplant.
After many weeks of testing, biop-
sies, doctor visits and more, Lacey was
finally diagnosed with a disease called
HLH (Hemophagocytic lymphohis-
tiocytosis), a rare condition in which
certain white blood cells (histiocytes
and lymphocytes) build up in organs
including the skin, spleen and liver, and
destroy other blood cells.
This causes fever and damages the
liver and spleen, resulting in enlarge-
ment of these organs.
Now Lacey needs a bone marrow
transplant.

Ellyn Davidson of Huntington Woods
knows of Lacey's plight because her
mother is a close friend of Lacey's
grandmother.
"While I've never met Lacey, her
story touched my heart deeply,"
Davidson said.
So Davidson sprang into action.
From 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9,
Davidson is holding a bone marrow
drive for Lacey at Temple Emanu-El in
Oak Park.
"If you are 18-60 years old and in
good health, please come get tested , ) '
Davidson urged. "It will take about 15
minutes, and it's a simple cheek swab.
You could be the one to save Lacey's life."
If you are unable to attend the event,
but wish to make a donation to defray
the cost of the testing, visit Davidson's
fundraising page at bit.ly/uryF2q.
Meanwhile, Lacey and her friends
started making bracelets to raise money
for this rare condition. She loves making
the bracelets, and her sisters love selling
them for her in the Chicago area.
Lacey also spends a lot of time mak-
ing paintings while in the hospital.

Lacey Horwitch loves to dance.

Davidson is hoping to raise aware-
ness of the need to be on the National
Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
Currently, 10,000 people need bone
marrow transplants and only half of
them receive one. If you have questions
about donating, go to the registry site,
marrow.org or call (800) 627-7692.

When David Broner retired from
the family business, he didn't want
to sit back in an armchair and watch
TV. "I'm a high-energy guy. I need to be
engaged in something meaningful,"
David says.
Now David shares his energy and
business knowledge with others. "I
volunteer as a SCORE counselor
through SBA, help college students get
summer jobs through CSlntemships.org ,
mentor Emerson Elementary students,
and I work with the HFL Board."
David's focus includes the hfl.bis
small business lending program, as it
reaches out to support and fund
new ideas and exisiting businesses
right here in our area.
"Our Board has a great variety of
expertise, so HFL can extend funds,
and in some cases can also offer
mentoring help. For those entrepreneurs,
we're not just cutting a check, we're
there supporting the business afterward.
"I was a small business guy. I
know what it's like, both the worries and
the successes. Programs like hfl.bis
are a true bonus for the community."
