Berkley elects first Jewish
city council member.
$398
Alan Kideckel, Jane Bais-DiSessa and Dr. Phil O'Dwyer
t took a while, but the citizens of
Berkley, which was first incorporat-
ed as a city in 1932, voted in their
first Jewish city councilman. City activ-
ist and entrepreneur Alan H. Kideckel
was elected on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
"It makes me proud',' said Kideckel,
who is familiar with the area's early
history, ironically including an active
Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s.
The city of about 14,000, of whom
some 90 percent are white, will be
represented by a diverse group of indi-
viduals, including Kideckel, Irish-born
mayor Dr. Phil O'Dwyer and Hispanic
city manager Jane Bais-DiSessa.
Kideckel as well as O'Dwyer and
recently elected council members
Eileen Steadman and Dan Terbrack
were sworn into office on Nov. 28.
"Our city government is very well
representative of the community','
O'Dwyer said. "By age, by gender and
by cultural and educational back-
ground."
Kideckel, a 20-year Berkley resi-
dent, has been active in community
life for the past 18 years, serving on
the Cruisefest Committee, as chair-
man of the Parks and Recreation
Advisory Board and as a member of
the Berkley-Huntington Woods Youth
Assistance. Kideckel, a widower, also
is on the executive committee of the
Sinai Guild and received its Most
Distinguished Service Award in 2006.
"I've always liked government','
Kideckel said. "I've been a voice in the
community, and now I also have a vote
to serve the residents of Berkley"
The goal for the city, according to
O'Dwyer, is the same as it has been for
the past several years — "to provide
quality services to residents and still
be able to balance the books."
Bais-DiSessa said that they've been
able to do that during these rough
economic times thanks to the "great
response from people in the com-
munity, including contractors and
employees, who have been willing to
come in and work with us:'
Berkley is a walking community,
the only city in Oakland County that
doesn't need to have school buses.
Everyone at city hall wants to preserve
that neighborhood spirit and small-
town feel.
"I'm looking forward to working
with Mayor O'Dwyer, the council,
the administration — and working
for the people of Berkley," Kideckel
said. II
