he would meet with Jewish leaders on
the Pollard case after telling rabbis at a
political meeting in Florida that "President
Obama was considering clemency, but I
told him, `Over my dead body are we going
to let him out before his time:"
Jewish organizational leaders from
across the political and religious spectrum
have called on successive presidents to
grant clemency to Pollard, a U.S. Navy
civilian analyst who was sentenced to life
in prison in 1987 for spying for Israel. In
recent months, Obama has received a flood
of clemency appeals on behalf of Pollard
from members of Congress, former U.S.
government officials and Israeli officials.
On Nov. 21, Pollard entered his 27th year
in prison in the United States.
Pollard's wife, Esther, said in a statement
that her husband may not survive another
year in prison.
"In the last year, as Jonathan's [medical]
condition became worse, he was too weak
to even sit through a one-hour visit. I feel
he's withering away in front of my very
eyes',' Esther Pollard said in the statement.
She added that after "26 years, all his
systems are feeble and we both know
that the next emergency hospitalization
or operation are just a matter a time, and
that no one is promising us he'll make it
through."
Pollard has been hospitalized four times
this year.
Esther Pollard's statement came as
the Justice for Jonathan Pollard cam-
paign called on its supporters to call the
White House and send the message "Free
Jonathan Pollard Now."
The campaign has publicized the White
House's phone number and set up a spe-
cial number in Israel that goes directly to
the White House for the cost of a local call,
according to Ynet.

FBI: 65% Of 2010 Religious
Hate Crimes Anti-Jewish
The FBI released new data summarizing
hate crime statistics for 2010, according
to the blog Religion Clause. Out of 1,409
religion-based hate crimes, 65.4 percent
were anti-Jewish according to the report.
In all, 6,224 incidents were reported
in 2010. The 1,409 religious-bias cases
constitute 20 percent from the total of inci-
dents. Forty-seven percent of the incidents
were racially motivated and 19.3 percent
were based on sexual orientation.
Within those incidents motivated by
religion, 13.2 percent were anti-Islamic;
4.3 percent were anti-Catholic, and the rest
targeted other religions, denominations
and religious viewpoints. JointMedia

Israel Deploying New
Intelligence Battalion
On Egyptian Border
The Israel Defense Forces has announced
the establishment of a new intelligence-

gathering battalion to be stationed along
the Israel-Egypt border. The move comes
after a surge in violence from the increas-
ingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, where radical
groups have gained a foothold following
the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak in February.
Soldiers in the new battalion, which also
includes female troops, are undergoing
extensive combat and intelligence training,
and some are also expected to be stationed
along Israel's border with Jordan. Israel

Syrian Refugees
Coming To Israel?
As the bloodshed in Syria intensifies,
Israel, like much of the world, believes that
Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's days
are numbered. Villages along Syria's border
with Israel have been fairly quiet, as they
are held firmly by the Syrian military, but
according to Ynet, Israel is preparing for
the riots to spill over to its borders.
If it does, there is a possibility; albeit
slim, that Syrian refugees will attempt to
escape and seek political asylum in Israel,
Ynet reported. If this happens, refugees are
expected to receive temporary shelter in
Israel.
The Israeli government and military is
also preparing for the renewal of border
protests by Palestinian refugees living
in Syria or Lebanon. The IDF has nearly
completed various construction projects,
including a lineup of barriers along the
border with Syria and a new border cross-
ing.
It has also been running drills, simulat-
ing different extreme scenarios including
an attempted soldier kidnapping and
gunshot fire during a border protest. —

Carnival Ride's Name Upsets
Fla. Holocaust Survivors
(JTA) — The name of a ride at a South
Florida fair is offending some Holocaust
survivors living in the area.
The Zyklon ride at the Broward County
Fair conjures up the cyanide gas used in
Nazi death camps.
"Of all the names in the world, why
do they need to name rides that?" Rita
Hofrichter, a Holocaust survivor who
works at the Holocaust Documentation
and Education Center in Hollywood, Fla.,
told the Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper.
"It's upsetting to me to come across that
as a survivor. I lost my whole family in the
gas chambers, particularly in Auschwitz."
The ride's owner, Frank Zaitshik of
Michigan-based Wade Shows, said Zyklon
is German for cyclone and that the ride
was named by its Italian manufacturer,
which has since gone out of business.
Zaitshik told the Sun Sentinel that he
has heard the complaint before and now
intends to change the ride's name.
