like one you made yourself. And if
you're itching to pick up your knit-
ting needles this chilly holiday season,
we've got three fresh, fun and simple
designs that will warm friends and fam-
ily, inside and out — designed just for us
by Lora Miller, owner of Fun With Fiber

CHECKED SCARF FOR HIM
This easy project combines simple stitches
with color work to create a sophisticated
scarf pattern.
Materials: Approximately 120 yards each of
3 colors of any sport weight yarn (sample:
Austermann, Seta)
A=brown, B=rust, C=white
Gauge: 26 sts=4 inches
Needle: size 4 needle
Finished size:4 3/4 inches by 45 inches
Terms: wyib=hold yarn in back, wyif=hold
yarn in front, k=knit, p=purl, sts=stitches
Checked Pattern (worked as a multiple
of 4 sts plus 2):
Row 1 (wrong side)-With A, purl.
Row 2-With B, kl, sl 1 wyib, *k2, s12 wyib;
rep from *, end k2, sl 1, kl.
Row 3-With B, p1, sl 1 wyif, *p2, sl 2 wyif;
rep from *, end p2, sl 1, pl.
Row 4-With A, knit.
Row 5-With C, p2, *sl 2, wyif, p2; rep
from *.
Row 6-With C, k2, *sl 2 wyib, k2; rep
from *.
Repeat rows 1-6 for pattern
Pattern:
Cast on 30 sts. Beginning with row 1, work
in checked pattern until piece measures
desired length. End with row 6.
Using A, bind off. Block.
Single crochet around scarf using color C.
