A Leader To Emulate
I
rene Sara Rodman of Southfield,
who died Nov. 11, 2011, at age 104,
was a consummate leader in the
Detroit Jewish community.
She became president of almost every
organization she joined and volunteered
for and was consultant to innumerable
worthy groups. A natural speechmaker,
she always knew her audience and
could galvanize them without ever
using notes.
Irene spoke from the
heart — and led from the
heart and mind with sechel
(common sense). She had
an unwavering love for
her family, her friends, her
organizations and, indeed,
as she often said, "for all
people."
As a child in Russia,
Irene was a victim of a
pogrom where almost her
entire village was burned
Irene Sara
to the ground because the
villagers had aided the
Jews. She and her youngest sister, Gerty,
survived in the attic of the one remain-
ing house. Later, they were reunited
with their mother and other siblings
who had fled to another village. Irene
remembered seeing "the chickens out-
side jumping around in the hot coals."
From her experiences in Russia and
her love for the Jewish culture, Irene
took an interest in fighting anti-Sem-
itism and discrimination and became
a member of the Anti-Defamation
League. She also was Midwest regional
chair of Jewish Women International,
president of the Primrose Benevolent
Society and a lifetime member of
Hadassah and Adat Shalom Synagogue.
She felt special compassion for survi-
vors of the Holocaust and was a con-
sultant to their B'nai B'rith group, the
Einstein Chapter.
She also tutored, drove cancer
patients to treatment, took care of her
own parents, siblings and husband
and was always there for her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Irene died at the age of 104, having
been in good health almost all of her
life. When she was 103, she literally
resurrected herself two times — first,
from a fall and then,
from a minor stroke —
after doctors told her
family she would not
make it.
What was the secret of
her longevity? Incredible
strength and determina-
tion, natural intelligence,
sechel, good genes, a
great heart and love
for all people, and —
despite what she had suf-
Rodman
fered, including the loss
of a daughter — always a
positive attitude.
"May her life serve as a model for
all those who lead us today and in the
future," said her daughter Joan.
Irene Sara Rodman is survived by her
daughter, Joan Rodman Smoller; grand-
daughters, Ana Rodman Goulianos
and Jocelyn Rodman; grandson, Alex
Malone; great-grandchildren, Noah,
Bryce, Nick and Ben; nephews, Arnold
Pearl, Louis Pearl, Joseph Pearl, Harold
Borkin; niece, Joyce Borkin.
She was the beloved wife of the late
Joseph David Rodman and the loving
mother of the late Anita Tucker.
