The nine-restaurant chain, which began in a sole, cozy location at Conant and McNichols in Detroit, is going back to its roots, but at the same time, reaching out to assist the wider community. At the original Buddy's location, a new square pizza concoction is being offered Friday and Saturday nights only — named after iconic Detroit rocker Kid Rock. The "Kid Rock Badass Pizza" is a one-of-a-kind pep- peroni-topped pizza featuring a crust made with Kid Rock's Michigan- made Badass Beer. Meanwhile, at all Buddy's locations and at all times, four new pizzas are offered, named after local cultural icons — the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford, the Parade Company and the Detroit Zoo — with a dollar from each sale going to benefit its namesake organization. (Don't worry, no animals were harmed producing the Detroit Zoo pizza — it's vegetarian.) Buddy's owner Robert Jacobs grew up in Southfield and attended University of Michigan and Wayne State University Law School. His father, Billy Jacobs, bought Buddy's -- in 1970, and the business has been in the family ever since. For Robert Jacobs, it's all about quality — a commitment that extends throughout the company — from its ingredients, to customer service, to the way Buddy's treats its staff, and also to giving back to local institutions. In the Jewish community, Jacobs is active with JARC. Another favorite organization is the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, which he helped found. Jacobs, a self- Robert Jacobs proclaimed sports junkie, works out daily, practices yoga and enjoys golf outings with the Sports Foundation, where he has golfed with baseball legends like Al Kaline, Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson. Buddy's has 530 employees, with 60 percent working full-time. "Business is fantastic in spite of the economy," Jacobs said. "We know times are tough for a lot of families, so we work harder to give people a reason to come back."
