Food For Thought

A

s legend would have it, one
of our favorite snacks/meals
had its beginning at a card
game. Supposedly, an earl and his
friends were in a heated card game,
and the host did not wish to
leave the table to get food.
He put some meat between
two pieces of bread and,
voila: The sandwich was
born. Thank you, Earl of
Sandwich.
However, sandwich fix-
ings have contributed to
some interesting expres-
sions in our daily lives.
Have you ever been
"sandwiched in"? This could
be literal, as in a crowded
bus or more figuratively as
being seen by a doctor during a sched-
uled, busy day.
Maybe you are upset with someone
or something and could say that you
"have a beef." If you should, try not to
"spread yourself too thin."
Have you known someone who has
contributed negatively to a situation

and found himself "in a pickle"? If it
was a particularly bad situation, the
person may truly be "in a jam."
Then, of course, there is the person
who often turns out to be his own
worst enemy. When viewing
one of his encounters, one
might observe that, "He is
toast!"
When a person finds
that he is wrong — and, of
course, this does not apply to
you or me — he may end up
with "egg on his face." At this
point it may be advantageous
to "butter someone up" and
thus rectify things.
For those of you devoted
readers — yes, you two know
who you are — let me slip
in a few of my usual puns. They fit
the topic but are a real stretch when it
comes down to it. But, hey, that's what
puns do.
•As the minister/farmer said,
"Lettuce spray."
• The expectant, hungry parent
yearned for the "pita patter of little feet."

And for those of you who do not
mind dating yourselves, there is the old
slang expression, "Wow, she's a tomato!"
For the last hurrah, here is a riddle:
Why would you never starve on a
desert island? Because you could eat
the sandwiches there." (Sand which is
there, get it?) Oh, never mind. I I

Hebrew Free Loan is pleased to
introduce David Contorer to the
community as our agency's new
Executive Director.
Having spent most of his career
working with Jewish philanthropy
and community service agencies,
David brings with him his experiences
forging partnerships with other groups
to deliver services. He also has the
benefit of the perspective of his wife,
Beth, a former HFL Board member.
"What is so energizing about HFL,"
David said, "is the hands-on aspect,
the ability to have a direct effect on
the people we serve. Beth felt it,
and now I'm excited to be part of it."
David wants to engage people in
conversations, learn about community
priorities, and educate others about
HFL. "I want to transmit the agency's
values and needs, the 'why' in why
we do this, and find the best ways
for HFL to help others.
"Providing the way to self-suffi-
ciency is the highest mitzvah."

The story doesn't end here.

Hope. A fresh start.
A good education.
The next great idea.
