Jewish Voters from page 16

ous question by research': he said.
"If Judaism was the explanation of
Jewish political behavior, you would
expect to find commonality across
nations, but you don't;' he said, noting
that in Britain, France, Australia and
South America, Jewish voters are gener-
ally not liberals. Instead, Wald advances
what he calls a "situational theory'
"Jews are attracted to the classi-
cally liberal polity of the United States
because they believe that its disregard
of religion as a basic for citizenship and
legal status has permitted them — more
wholeheartedly and consistently than
elsewhere — to participate fully in soci-
ety' Wald argued. "They are concerned
primarily to enable a system that has
allowed them to succeed and prosper"

Israel Factor
Neither political scientist felt that Israel
would be a significant factor in the
Jewish vote.
"Ask American Jews their sentiment
about Israel, and they are generally [sup-
portive]," Wald said, "but their behavior
in the political realm — and the degree
they act on their political convictions
— is much less. It is unlikely Israel will
play a determinant role in Jewish voters'
decisions:'
Weisberg agrees because of what he
calls "perceptual screens:'
"People tend to screen out ambigu-
ous information that conflicts with
their party affiliation," Weisberg said.

Beth Shalom Movies
Include Minyan
How do you get a minyan for Minchah
and Maariv on a Sunday evening? If
you're Congregation Beth Shalom, you
start your own mini-film festival. Cost
of admission: Attendance at minyan!
Beth Shalom kicked off its Minchah,
Maariv and Movies series on Sunday,
Nov. 6. Thirty congregants came for
minyan at 5 p.m. and stayed to enjoy
free popcorn, with a light kosher din-
ner available for purchase, and to
watch the movie The Infidel. Minchah,
Maariv and Movies will be held on
the first Sunday of every month. Next
month's movie, on Dec. 4, will be Nora's
Will. All are welcome.

"Ambiguous information will be inter-
preted in line with previous sympathies,"
meaning those critical of Obama will
focus on his disagreements with Israeli
leaders, and Obama supporters will focus
on those areas where he provides sup-
port, such as military cooperation.
But,"[Israel can become a major issue]
if it becomes perceived as an existen-
tial issue," Weisberg said. "If so, it may
become a very important voting issue
[for Jews] as well as for others" con-
cerned about Israel.
Ruth Blackman of West Bloomfield
and her friend Sabra Shekter of
Farmington Hills were engaged in ani-
mated discussion following the program
sponsored by the Cohn-Haddow Center
for Judaic Studies at Wayne State, the
Jewish Forum and Adat Shalom.
"I got a feeling that both speakers were
waiting for [new candidates] to stand up
and say, 'Try me!: [like they are] waiting
for an unknown candidate;' Blackman
said. "The parties are in chaos. I never
felt there was a strong Jewish feeling for
[Obama], but there was liberalism in the
voting."
"If the economy stays as is and the
Jewish vote falls to 65 percent, then
Romney will win:' Shekter said, agree-
ing with the academics. She called them
very good and very well-prepared."
"If the economy changes, [Obama]
has a chance she said, hoping it does.
"I find it difficult to give up the social
agenda." LI
