A Sportin' Good Time!

Good food and good humor mark Hall of Fame Induction Dinner.

A

nother induction dinner
by Michigan Jewish Sport
Foundation's Hall of Fame arm
... And again a success as more than 300
attended the recent interesting evening at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Southfield.
It was kosher caterer Daniel Kohn's first
MJSHF induction dinner since his dad,
Paul Kohn, passed on ... Together with
Paul's fine right-hand gal Patti Paterni,
with him more than 30 years, the food sta-
tion format made it much easier to obtain
vittles ... Rather than being spread from
one end of the room to the other
and tiring out the walking-
around attendees, only an
appetizer station floated
alone ... The others were
bunched together in a
large square with its
servers in the center.
During dinner, smoke
wafted above, and Myron
"Mynie" Milgrom joked
that it was probably from
the smoked salami ... Executive
Director Dave Blatt confirmed that it was
true ... Mynie also reminisced about
the "good old days" on 12th Street where
Soberman & Milgrom Paint was located
... The Cream of Michigan restaurant
on Pingree and 12th never locking its
doors, open 24 hours, seven days a week
... Health guru Jim Berk on the auction
microphone along with telling folks how
to eat healthy.
At the induction ceremonies, done from
a portable, lighted stage, Mike "Stoney"
Stone did a masterful job as emcee, jok-
ing along with his introduction patter
... Mike opened up with all the good
things happening to Detroit athletic
teams and brought laughter with his,
"Even the Detroit Pistons are undefeated!"
(They were still in an NBA lockout and
hadn't played a game yet) ... Blind since
birth, Richard Bernstein gave a stirring

many people ... Their faces turn to sud-

den road maps at a cuisine they may have
an erroneous perception of.
Contrary to what many believe, sushi
does not mean raw fish ... It is really just
one style of the popular Japanese fare,
called Edo, but is actually just a term for
fermenting meat or fish.
It's true that some sushi contains raw
fish, but not all is raw ... There are many
types of sushi like cream cheese, steamed
lobster, smoked salmon, fried shrimp, imi-
tation crab meat, cucumbers, fried oysters,
etc.
Sushi is a very healthy food, rich in pro-
tein, Omega-3s, vitamins and minerals,
plus it is low in fat.
If you are eating sushi for the first time or
are worried about getting bad sushi, don't
eat it off buffets or buy it pre-packaged at
a supermarket where it may sit for long
periods of time ... Order it fresh at a sushi
restaurant ... The menus at most sushi eat-
eries tell which items contain raw fish.
Among the many types of sushi, not just
raw fish, are a variety of styles ... Sashimi,
for example, is raw fish, nigiri is either raw
fish or other seafood served on blocks of
sushi rice ... Maki are sushi rolls that usu-
ally come in cylindrical or conical shapes
and contain combinations of cooked or
uncooked fish, other seafood, vegetables, rice,
seaweed, fish eggs, cream cheese, fruit, etc.
Folks who are eating sushi for the first
time might want to have the cylindrical
maki rolls first and then maybe go to sashi-
mi or nigri ... But don't let anyone fool you
about sushi ... It is not just raw fish.
