t doesn't happen very often in
the weekly Brotherhood-Eddie
Jacobson B'nai B'rith bowling
league.
Sometimes it's
three or four times
a season, and some-
times it's six or seven
times. A bowler will
roll several strikes in
a row to start a game,
and the other league
members will eventu-
Ben Shapiro
ally stop bowling to
... 300
give the bowler the
best chance possible,
without distractions,
to roll a 300.
The entire league of
around 50 or so guys
will stop if a perfect
game is still a pos-
Ryan Columbus sibility in the 10th
... 299
frame. Many bowlers
will gather around the
lanes where the 300
story is unfolding to provide encour-
agement.
This special moment happened twice
in one night last month at Country Lanes
in Farmington Hills. While that's incred-
ible enough, it took place on the same
pair of lanes. And in successive games.
Ben Shapiro rolled a 300 in his sec-
ond game, the second perfect game of
his career. Ryan Columbus bowled a
299 in his third game, the best score of
his life by 19 pins. One measly tenpin
separated him from his first 300.
It would have been an even more
remarkable story if Shapiro and
Columbus were on the same team, but
they were on opposing teams.
Shapiro, 30, a West Bloomfield resi-
dent and assistant manager at a Troy
sporting goods store, bowled games of
211, 300 and 190 for a 701 series.
Columbus, 34, who lives in Keego
Harbor and works in a family alarm
business, bowled 203-224-299 — 726.
Both carry a 200-plus average, so
their big games weren't a surprise. But

they'll remember the night of Oct. 24
for the rest of their lives.
It certainly helped that I had bowled
another 300 game," Shapiro said, recall-
ing the perfect game he bowled in a
league in January 2007 at Hazel Park
Bowl. He had a 300-199-182 — 681
that night.
"The guys in our league cheering for
me also were a big plus:' he said. "They
really wanted me to bowl a 300, and I'm
glad I was able to do it"
Shapiro said all 12 balls he threw
in his latest 300 game were good hits,
but the last one gave him an anxious
moment.
"It was outside my comfort zone, but
it was a solid hit:' he said.
Columbus said he wasn't nervous on
his ninth, 10th or 11th strikes, but his
12th ball was a different story.
"I left a ringing 10 pin," he said. "In a
way, I was happy, though, because I kept
the ball on the lane. I was so nervous, I
was wondering if I'd be able to do that:'
Columbus said Shapiro's 300 didn't
provide motivation for his near-perfect
game.
"I just think it was a night where the
lane conditions were good for Ben and
myself' he said.

Rose Blooms At Penn State
With longtime head football coach Joe
Paterno fired last week amid an abhor-
rent scandal, beleaguered Penn State
University certainly needs someone it
can be proud of.
That would be 33-year volleyball
coach Russ Rose, who was inducted into
the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
in 2010 and the American Volleyball
Coaches Association Hall of Fame in
2007.
Rose's career record going into
this season was 1,033-164, a gaudy
.863 winning percentage, and he had
coached 31 All-Americans.
His team has won four consecutive
NCAA championships, eight straight
Big Ten Conference titles, and it had
a streak of 109 consecutive victories
from 2007-2010.
