EPAMbe dln Ta herkenare h. ) Nuclear Threat Israeli Officials and North American Jewish Leaders Respond to Iran Nuclear Weapon Report. IF P. Iranian nuclear power plant in Bushehr, southern Iran. JFNA Report T he release of a new report from the International Atomic Energy Agency that says Iran has been working to develop a nuclear weapon since 2003 came as leaders of Israel and the United States got together at one of the largest annu- al gatherings of the North American Jewish community — the Jewish Federations of North America's (JFNA) General Assembly in Denver to discuss global Jewish issues. "Nuclear weapons, held by a radical and extreme regime, calling for the destruc- tion of the State of Israel, are unacceptable. This cannot be allowed',' said Shaul Mofaz, head of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of Israel's Knesset."Israel must be prepared to deal militarily with the Iranian nuclear issue. But I believe that this option should be used when all else fails." Mofaz, who has 36 years of experience in the Israel Defense Forces, culminating in his appointment as chief of general staff with the rank of brigadier general, spoke in an open session to participants at the Jewish Federations of North America's 2011 General Assembly, this year in Denver. The burden of preventing a nuclear Iran must not be Israel's alone, Mofaz added. "The international community, led by the United States, has to do everything — and I stress everything — within its power to stop the Iranian nuclear pro- gram. This is the acid test of President Obama's foreign policy,' he said. Last year at the Jewish Federations' 2010 General Assembly in New Orleans, the JFNA!s board of trustees passed a resolu- tion condemning Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and urging international sanc- tions to ease the threat. JFNA is also advocating in Washington to protect international sanctions against Iran from attempts in the Congress to bypass them. "The threat of a nuclear-armed Iran is a matter of the gravest concern and utmost urgency — not just to Israel, but to the United States, Canada and the entire world:' said William Daroff, vice president for public policy and director of the Washington office of the Jewish Federations of North America. "We applaud the efforts of the Obama administration and congressional lead- ers to ensure that the world knows that a nuclear Iran is not an option. The report is a wake-up call that we cannot give an inch and must do everything possible to pre- vent the regime in Tehran from developing a nuclear weapons capacity."
