Haven Hills is a Los Angeles-area domestic violence shelter that provides safety and support for abused women and their chil- dren. The Community Hope Award bird- house award given to the Alperts was made by children at Haven Hill's Safe Haven sup- port program. The Alperts were recognized because of their committed support of Haven Hills for more than 26 years. He is only the fifth accounting professor to have earned this award since 1968. Several Frankel Jewish Academy seniors have received honors. Polina Fradkin, daughter of Yakov Fradkin and Dr. Anna Strumba of Farmington Hills and a Fradkin senior at Frankel Jewish Academy, is one of 57 students chosen to participate in the 2011 World Russian Language Festival in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Her essay was chosen from 1,000 composi- tions submitted by students from 70 countries worldwide. Senior Charlotte Master, daughter of Deanna and Neil Master of Northville, was selected by Mount Holyoke College to participate in the col- lege's Focus on Master Diversity Program. The all-expenses-paid trip is offered to qualifying high school seniors who are interested in applying to the women's college. Pachter Lichterman Three FJA seniors have been recognized for academic achievement by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Jonathan Pachter, son of Dr. Glickman Naomi and Rabbi Elliot Pachter of West Bloomfield, was named a national merit semifinalist; Mile Lichterman, daugh- ter of Susan and Mark Lichterman of Huntington Woods, and Helene Glickman, daughter of Robyn and David Glickman of Southfiled, received National Merit Honorable mentions. Shayla McDermott, a former Troy High student, has been awarded the 2011- 2012 Presidential Scholarship at Eastern Michigan University. She wants to become a music therapist and work with autistic children and earn a master's degree in music therapy or research music therapy. McDermott is also considering going to rabbinical school to become a cantor or a rabbi.
