of the original investors in the Detroit
Jewish News. Zieve, a transformative
leader at Wayne State University Press,
Karmanos Cancer Center-Michigan
Cancer Foundation and Jewish Ensemble
Theatre, is the daughter of Leonard
Simons, another original investor in the
Detroit Jewish News. Both Simons and
Walter Field helped mentor Horwitz when
he joined the Jewish News in 1986.
Additionally, four of our community's
most well-respected leaders and philan-
thropists have agreed to act as Honorary
Chairs: Eugene Applebaum, the Hon.
Avern Cohn, A. Alfred Taubman and
Mandell "Bill" Berman.
"It's so important that we remember
our Detroit Jewish community history.
Digitizing the Jewish News is the ultimate
way to remind us of where we have been
as a community and where we can go,"
Berman said. "Not to have this
history avail-

able to everyone would be a tragedy. The
Foundation will help us recapture it and
and share it with the world."
One of the premises of the Detroit
Jewish News Foundation is that we need
to understand the past in order to move
forward.
All of the people on our Honorary
Board understand and value the role of
the Jewish News to chronicle and shape the
history of our community," Horwitz said.
Also on the board is Aaron Lansky,
founder of the National Yiddish Book
Center in Amherst, Mass., who almost
single-handedly salvaged much of Yiddish
culture as it was being thrown away in
dumpsters across North America, Europe
and Israel. His center is one of the most
advanced in terms of digitization
and universal access to
its col-

lections and is spawning a new generation
of Yiddish literacy and scholarship.
"I know the value of preserving cul-
tural history:' said Lansky. "Preserving
the history of the Metro Detroit Jewish
community is essential, and the archives
of the Jewish News are the perfect place
to begin. These back issues provide an
incomparable chronicle of a great Jewish
community, and we need to act quickly to
preserve them and make them searchable
and accessible by all. What a wonderful
legacy to leave our children!"
According to Horwitz,
the project will begin
as soon as the
resources

are available to make the initial
investment, about $50,000.
"I'd love to see at least a
portion of the Jewish News
digitized and available
by Rosh Hashanah
2012:' Horwitz
said. I 1
