frontlines Don't Bet On It W hat is life? (No, I am not about to go off on a philo- sophical rant; you should know me better than that.) According to one old song, it is "just a bowl of cherries." One poet sug- gests it involves "the road not taken." Often we have heard that it is "just a gamble." Aha! Considering the latter, we can become aware of the many gam- bling terms that pervade our daily existence. If we want things to go well in business, our social lives, etc., we are reminded that we need to play our cards right. This may involve know- ing when to bluff (keep a poker face). We are alerted always to play our cards close to our vests. Well, of course, you are not going to want to broadcast your every move; not unless you are genuinely naïve, such as I. How we act when the chips are down may determine our strength of character. Usually the term means that there is no more action or play, but we have adapted it to indicate "in the face of a crisis" or other challenge. We also must remain cognizant of when to cash in our chips. Interesting to note that this has also become common parlance for "going off to that big bingo game in the sky"; but I prefer not to dwell on something so final. If you wish to keep hold- ing all the cards (being in command), you sometimes have to keep an ace up your sleeve. Though I would not recommend this action for an actual card game, it may be a good business practice — at least it will provide more positive outcomes. Do you feel that your life is often determined by a precarious spin of the wheel? Ah, you fatalist, you! Then you probably have no real feel for JN CONTENTS Mows Mary C. Norm beginner's luck. If that is the case, you will never ask someone to bank- roll you; you do not have the courage of your convictions. You are not ready to put everything on a throw of the dice. Well, if you know where the action is, you are probably a real go-getter who is ready to ante up and put a fair amount on the nose. Advice: Be ready to enjoy what life has to offer; take a gamble! tieJEWISHNEWS corn Nov. 10-16, 2011 I 13-19 Chesvan 5772 I Vol. CXL, No. 14 Stay in touch. Add your insight. Be informed. In the name of this special and compassionate couple, the fund will help these two vital agencies pro- vide a safety net to fill gaps other services or loan programs don't cover. For example, imagine someone who is receiving medical assistance through Project Chessed, who approaches HFL for a loan to purchase a reliable car so they can get to work. The loan is approved, but no qualified co-signers are available. Hebrew Free Loan and Jewish Family Service may agree to provide money from the Keane Fund without requiring co-signers. Supporters of Mary and Norm helped raise $90,000 to launch the fund, which helps, just like Mary and Norm would, to keep people from falling through the cracks.
