lizabeth Gelb and Steve Slobin
will be honored Monday at the

Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame induction dinner for being named
the Jewish News Female and Male High
School Athletes of the Year.
They're deserving winners. Gelb was
an All-State swimmer all four years she
attended Ann Arbor Huron, and Slobin
was a key member of the undefeated
2010 state champion Farmington Hills
Harrison football team.
The next step in their athletic jour-
neys has taken them in entirely different
directions.
Gelb is a freshman on the powerhouse
Princeton University women's swimming
team. Slobin is a freshman on the first-
year Siena Heights University football
team.
Both are exactly where they want to be,
athletically and academically.
"I chose Princeton for the academ-
ics, of course,' said Gelb, who made the
swimming team as a walk-on. "If I ended
up being just a student and not swim-
ming, that would have been fine. But I'm
glad I'm on the team."
Princeton is 190-46 in dual meets in
Susan Teeter's 27 years as coach. The
Tigers have won 38 straight dual meets
since a 2007 loss to Michigan, and four of
the last five Ivy League Conference meets.
They finished 18th in the 2009 and
2010 NCAA meets, the best for a non-
athletic scholarship program.
Gelb brings a winning resume to the
winning Princeton team. She qualified
for the Michigan High School Athletic
Association state meet four times while
she was at Huron, and she was a member
of two All-American relay teams when
she was a senior.
She swam the 100-yard butterfly, 200
individual medley, 200 medley relay and
400 freestyle relay in each state meet, and
was a team captain as a junior and senior.
Outside of Huron, she swam for Club
Wolverine year-round and was a USA
Swimming Scholastic All-American in
2009, 2010 and 2011.
Being named the Jewish News Female
Athlete of the Year has taken on special
significance for Gelb since she arrived at
Princeton.
She said she feels a stronger bond to
her Jewish heritage thanks to Hillel's
Center for Jewish Life on the campus.
"The people there have been so wel-

of the Year Elizabeth Gelb and

coming," she said.
Slobin is studying sports management
at Siena Heights and hopes someday to
be an agent for NFL players.
In the meantime, he's relishing what he
calls an opportunity of a lifetime to help
launch a collegiate football program.
"It's important that everyone on our
team set the tone for future teams:' he
said.
Unfortunately, Slobin's freshman col-
legiate season ended early.
The running back suffered a slightly
torn meniscus in his right knee during
practice after the second game and has
been granted a medical red-shirt. When
he returns to the gridiron next fall, he'll
retain his freshman eligibility.
It's the second straight season Slobin
has injured his right knee.
He tore the ACL and meniscus during
Harrison's opening-round playoff game
against Birmingham Brother Rice last fall
and returned to see brief action in the
Hawks' 38-28 win over Lowell in the state
championship game at Ford Field.
Slobin said he's not worried about
another injury to the knee next season.
"I'm working hard in rehab. I'm posi-
tive I'll be fine,' he said.
Siena Heights is doing fine in its open-
ing season. The Saints were 5-1 after
their first six games and had outscored
their opponents 234-75.
Gelb won't be able to make it to the
Hall of Fame dinner because of commit-
ments at Princeton, but Slobin will be
there.
"I'm really looking forward to going','
he said. "I hope I get a chance to talk
with (Hall of Fame inductee) Mitch
Albom. Being named the Jewish News
Male Athlete of the Year is a great honor.
There are a lot of outstanding Jewish
high school athletes."
The dinner is at 5:30 p.m. at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield.
The other Hall of Fame induct-
ees besides Albom are Irving "Pro"
Boim, Bruce and Rick Seid, and Hank
Wineman. Richard Bernstein will receive
the Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award, and
the Jewish War Veterans Joseph Bale Post
will be recognized.
