embers of Detroit Nation
from New York, Los Angeles,
Chicago and Washington,
D.C. returned home for a "Discover the
D" weekend Oct. 14-16.
Detroit Nation is a grassroots
organization made up of Detroit and
Michigan expats who still have a vest-
ed interest in their hometown.
"We're dedicated to improving
the flow of funds, ideas and energy
between native Detroiters now liv-
ing elsewhere and our hometown,"
explained Bryan Fenster, a national
board member who recently returned
home from Chicago to take a job at
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. "It's a way to stay engaged,
meet peers also interested in what's

happening in southeast Michigan, and

on down to the city and make things
more tangible?" he said.
The group started out as the non-
profit 635 Mile started by former
Detroiter Rachel Jacobs, who lives in
New York City, which is 635 miles from
Detroit. "Mile" groups sprouted across
the country, then combined under the
new name, Detroit Nation.
During the Discover the D weekend,
40 members (10 from out of town)
toured Quicken Loans Headquarters
downtown and had a conversation
there about re-imagining Detroit. They
met with folks at New Detroit Inc.,
toured the Russell Industrial Center
artist studios, and met with Detroit
