Be Good To Yourself

BBYO's B-Fit program offers girls
positive self-images.

Marissa Siegel
Teen2Teen Staff Writer

0

n Oct. 2, I went to Tam-0-
Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield with dozens of other
Jewish girls to kick off the "B-Fit: Healthy
Bodies, Healthy Minds" eight-week
BBYO-sponsored program. My Sunday
afternoon was filled with healthy snacks,
an inspiring presentation from the cre-
ator of OperationBeautiful.com and a
Zumba session.
To begin the program, there were fresh
fruits and vegetables to snack on, along
with iced tea and pink lemonade, which
was definitely a crowd favorite. After we
all had something to eat, Caitlin Boyle,
who started Operation Beautiful, gave a
presentation about body image, ending
negative self-talk or "Fat Talk" and about
how the media affects our perception of
others and ourselves.
It was so empowering to listen to
her share stories and messages, and I
took countless lessons away from her
visit. (Caitlin, who lives in Charlotte,
N.C., began Operation Beautiful to end
negative self-talk. She started by leaving
sticky notes with positive messages in
public places for other women to find;
then she launched the website and wrote
a book.)
To wrap up the afternoon, we got our
hearts pumping with Zumba. We all may
not have been dancers, but everyone got
up to try the moves. Without even real-
izing it, we were being healthy and exer-
cising, and having so much fun while
doing it.
This program taught me so much
about self-esteem, and how talking badly

about yourself can also have a negative
impact on the people around you.
"Fat Talk" is putting yourself down
verbally, and sometimes we don't even
know we're doing it. But when we com-
pare our bodies to other people, don't
correct ourselves when talking badly
about ourselves, or when we Fat Talk to
our friends, it not only hurts our self-
image and how we feel about ourselves,
but it encourages family and friends to
Fat Talk about themselves and damage
their own self-esteem.
I also learned that in the same way
Fat Talk can have a negative impact,
an anonymous compliment can make
someone's day, week or life, while also
making you feel better about yourself.
Another important life lesson that I
took away from this program was that
exercise doesn't have to be hard and
painful. You can get just as good of a
workout by taking a class with a group of
friends and have a great time doing it.
The B-Fit kickoff was not only a fun
time, but truly had an impact upon the
way I view mental and physical health.
The B-Fit: Healthy Bodies, Healthy
Minds eight-week program is definitely
going to be a successful and life-chang-
ing experience for the 40 Jewish girls
enrolled in the program.
