A
t 9:30 a.m on Monday morn-
ing, Oct. 10, things at Frankel
Jewish Academy were not
the same as usual. Throngs of stu-
dents stood mingling in the Jewish
Community Center lobby as waves
of grandparents flowed out from the
Berman Center for the Performing
Arts. Hugs, kisses, introductions —
this wasn't just any normal day. It was
Grandparents/VIP Day.
FJA prides itself on its ability to stand
out from other schools because of its
personal, homey feel, and Grandparents/
VIP Day is a way for the school family to
stay closer than ever. Walking through
the hallways and passing pair upon pair
of grandparent and grandchild, I could
practically smell nachas in the air.
This year was the biggest and most suc-
cessful Grandparents Day event yet, with
215 grandparents attending. More than
half of the students had a guest that day.
This special day gives grandparents
as well as other visitors an opportunity
to see firsthand how FJAls day-to-day
schedule allows for Jewish tradition to
be passed on to the next generation of
leaders.
What most intrigued many visitors
was how iPads, the newest of technol-
ogy, were used to help teach the age-old
lessons of the Bible and Talmud.
However, not only the visitors learned

something — the teachers did, too. Dr.
Malli Holoschitz's Honors Hebrew IV
class entertained a grandparent-inclu-
sive discussion, in mixed Hebrew and
English, about the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
"I was pleasantly surprised by the
many fresh ideas the visitors offered to
our conversation',' Holoschitz says.
Nothing brings more joy to FJA grand-
parents than to see their grandchildren
learning the traditions, values and
language of their ancestors. This special
event is dedicated to the passing of a
Jewish education from generation to gen-
eration, and nobody deserves to see
this more than Bubbie and Zaydie.
