obituaries

JANE PEARL SCHKLOVEN APTEKAR,
92, former Detroiter of California.
She was born in Detroit to Solomon and
Sonia Schkloven on May 5, 1919. She met
her one love, Gerald Aptekar, in Central
High School and studied to be a music
teacher at Wayne State University.
After the Army, her husband set up a
successful dental practice. They built their
dream house on Orchard Lake after both
their sons became physicians. They spent
winters in Scottsdale and moved to San
Francisco in 2009.
She leaves a legacy of loving devotion
to family and friends. She loved life and
people and greatly enjoyed music, food, art
and travel. She was known for her whimsi-
cal flair and style in clothing and jewelry.
She lived life to the fullest and taught all to
enjoy what they have.
Her husband Jerry pre-deceased her in
2009.
Mrs. Aptekar is survived by two sons,
Robert (Judy) of California and Donald
(Harriet) of Colorado; five grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to the Jewish
Home of San Francisco.

GUSSIE BRESLER, 99, of Oak Park, died
Oct. 7, 2011.
She is survived by her son and daughter-

in-law, Gerald and Nahid Bresler of Encino,
Calif.; daughters and son-in-law, Marilyn
Freedland of West Bloomfield, and Andrea
and Allan Stahl of Oak Park; grandchildren,
Sheryl Stahl, Jeffrey and Samantha Stahl,
Terry and Leslee Statfield, Cary and Pam
Statfield, Steven and Renee Statfield, Marc
Bresler and Jason Bresler; great-grandchil-
dren, Jakob Stahl, Keegan Stahl, Stefanee
Statfield, Malenee and Justin Johnson,
Ashlee Statfield, Courtney Statfield,
Brandon Statfield, Tyler Statfield, Austin
Statfield, Kevin Statfield and Kyle Statfield;
great-great-grandson, Liam Bruce Johnson.
Interment was held at Machpelah
Cemetery. Contributions may be made to a
charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Ira
Kaufman Chapel.

BLANCHE ROSSEN DIX, 91, of
McDonough, Ga., died Oct. 4, 2011.
She is survived by her sons and daugh-
ter-in-law, Dennis Dix of Oak Park, Dr.
Barry and Rebecca Dix of McDonough;
grandchildren, Rebecca Rossen, David
(Emma) Dix, Carolyn Dix; great-grandchild,
Isabella; many loving nieces, nephews,
other family members and friends.
Mrs. Dix was the beloved wife of the late
Dr. Harold G. Dix; sister of the late Dr. Jack
Rossen.
Contributions may be made to a charity

of one's choice. Interment was held at the
Adat Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery in
Livonia. Arrangements by Dorfman Chapel.

DORA
(MANDELBAUM)
KANER, 84, of
Southfield, passed away
Oct. 6, 2011.
She was born in
Windsor, Ontario. Mrs.
Kaner was one of the
Kaner
first Jewish women
to graduate from Detroit Institute of
Technology in Pharmacology, in 1952. She
was a registered pharmacist until the last
year of her life and worked alongside her
husband Sam, also a registered pharma-
cist, in their own business, Kaner Drugs,
in Detroit for over 35 years.
She was the beloved and devoted wife of
the late Samuel Kaner.
She was particularly proud of her seven
children. She was and will continue to be a
true inspiration to everyone who knew her.
Mrs. Kaner is survived by her children,
Faye (Jeffrey) Schreiber of Jerusalem,
Israel, Jon (Barbara) Kaner of West
Bloomfield, Dr. David Kaner (Dr. Carole
Davis) of Roanoke, Texas, Steven Kaner
of Southfield, Jane (Fred) Foreman
of West Bloomfield, Elizabeth (Philip

Ronald) Goutman of West Bloomfield,
Shani (Adam) Ross of Metamora; adoring
grandchildren, Avital Schreiber, Daniel

BENJAMIN KAPLAN, 98, of Waterford,
died Oct. 1, 2011.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn,
N.Y., the youngest of seven siblings. He
owned and operated Kaplan & Kaplan, a
company that sold, installed and designed
soda fountains, restaurant equipment
and kitchens throughout the New York
metropolitan area. He retired to Pembroke
Pines, Fla., where he served as treasurer of
