"I developed this program when I was living in England in the late 1990s and was asked to take it outside the country as part of a government program," says Kanter, artistic director of VOICETheatre, an international collaboration of stage artists based in New York who create new works and explore the classics. "I found that the configuration lets us all learn from one another while creating something larger than ourselves. I have seen the development of friendships and bonds through participation." Kanter, who has worked in Israel, also brings teaching experience to the program. She has been on the faculty of Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y., and has done short programs for a variety of theater centers, including Bowdoin College in Maine, Performance Exchange in Scotland, Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv and Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah. Pushing Through was a Kanter musical theater piece that brought Israeli and Palestinian actors into the same touring production. "Helping young people develop social consciousness is the most important goal of the Legacy initia- tive," Kanter says. "We've been talk- ing to other theaters about bringing it to their areas, and I hope we can take it on tour." 17J Legacy will be performed Nov.12-22 at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts, on the Jewish Community Center campus in West Bloomfield. Curtain times are 5 and 8:30 p.m. Saturdays, Nov.12 and 19; 2 p.m. Sundays, Nov.13 and 20; 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, Nov. 15-16;10 a.m. Tuesdays, Nov.15 and 22, and Thursday, Nov.17; and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. $10-$20. Salem High School in Canton also is taking part, and one more suburban school still is to be chosen. The professional cast includes Milica Govich as Anna, Inga Wilson as Vera and Patrick O'Connor Cronin as David. Robert Langdon Lloyd, who takes the role of Yasha, is Kanter's husband and appeared in the European presentations. Workshop leaders include profes- sional actors as well as the teaching staff in the respective schools. "I became enthusiastic about the project as soon as I heard about it from Shauna," says Orbach, who got to know the writer-director as she worked on two JET productions, Women's Minyan and Sleuth. "I think young people should know more about the Holocaust, the dangers of discrimination and the impact of bullying, and they can learn about all that directly through the play and the workshops. "What's most important is the attention that's given to respect- ing and valuing differences among people while understanding that people have more in common than they have differences?'
