hen Pam Turkin started
Just Baked it was basi-
cally a hobby, she said.
She opened her cupcake company in
Livonia in 2009 and has since added
six additional locations. Last week,
she marked a new milestone: opening
a new 16,000-square-foot production
facility in Livonia, which will house
a state-of-the-art cake studio and the
company's corporate offices.
Melissa Kukulka will lead the new
cake shop, which allows guests to
meet with Just Baked's event coordina-
tors and watch decorators work.
The extra space was needed for
Just Baked's new retail program for
grocery stores. The program provides
six of Just Baked's top flavors in a
two-pack for grocery stores, includ-
ing vanilla stuffed, chocolate stuffed,
chocolate dream, red velvet, carrot and
cherry chip. The two-packs retail for
$3.99 and are currently available in
400 stores in nine states.
"We needed a larger facility for our
employees to work and create. We
were also in desperate need of more
space for our new cake shop and our
corporate offices," Turkin said.
The facility's grand opening took
place Oct. 6, which included the
unveiling of a graffiti wall created by
Detroit graffiti artist Kobie Solomon,
who created the massive, 8,000-square
foot "Chimera Project" mural on the
westward-facing side of Building No.
2 at the Russell Industrial Center in
Detroit. Solomon is a graduate of the
College for Creative Studies in Detroit
"We wanted a fun atmosphere that
reflected our product," Turkin said.
The building featured a 30-foot long

cinderblock wall. Turkin, who had
seen Solomon's work, asked him to
design the mural. "He came with a
can of spray paint in our hot, non-air
conditioned bakery and got to work.
He was amazing. The wall is really
representative of Detroit — and the
opposite of what you'd expect at a cup-
cake shop."
Thanks to the new facility, Turkin
said cupcake production, at 850,000
in 2010, can now grow by 200 percent.
She also announced that the company
is looking to hire an additional 20
bakers, packers and warehouse per-
sonnel.
Around 200,000 cupcakes a month
will be baked at the Livonia facility.
"That's a lot of cupcakes," Turkin said,
more than I dreamed possible when I
began baking cupcakes as a 'hobby' in
my own kitchen!"
