Hank Wineman:
He was inducted
into the Albion
College Athletic
Hall of Fame in
2007 for his
prowess on the
football field; he
was an All-American, NCAA
Division III rushing champion,
and Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association Most
Valuable Player in 1991. He still
holds Albion records for most
consecutive 100-yard rushing
games (18) and most yards in a
season (1,629 in nine games). A
football star at Berkley High
School (Class of 1988), he helped
the Bears win their first
Southeastern Michigan
Association championship in 20
years.
The honors won't end with the
inductions of the new Hall of
Famers.
Richard
Bernstein, an
attorney and an
inductee of the
Athletes with
Disabilities
Hall of Fame,
Alai will be present-
ed the Alvin Foon Humanitarian
Award.
In addition, the Jewish News Male
and Female High School Athletes of
the Year and Bill Hertz Scholarship
winner will be honored; and Jewish
War Veterans Joseph L. Bale Post
474 will be recognized.
Football player Stephen Slobin
from Farmington Hills Harrison
and swimmer Elizabeth Gelb from
Ann Arbor Huron are the Athletes
of the Year. Lacrosse player Ari
Cicurel from Bloomfield Hills
Andover is the Hertz Scholarship
winner. Slobin is attending Siena
Heights University, Gelb is at
Princeton University, and Cicurel is
at the University of Michigan.
Proceeds from the induction
ceremony, dinner and silent
auction will benefit cancer and
children's charities and the Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame.
