Walk To Benefit
Pancreatic Cancer
PurpleStride Detroit 2011 will be held
Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Detroit Zoo in Royal
Oak. This family run/walk is the third
annual event to raise funds and aware-
ness for pancreatic cancer.
Last year's event drew 4,000 people
and, to date, the walks have raised
almost $500,000. All proceeds benefit the
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Facts about pancreatic cancer:
• Pancreatic cancer has the deadliest
survival rate. Within one year of diagno-
sis, 75 percent of patients will die, and 94
percent will die within five years.
• Of the top five deadliest cancers, pan-
creatic cancer has the lowest survival rate
(6 percent).
• The current state of pancreatic can-
cer research and understanding of the
disease is equal to where breast cancer
research was in the 1930s.
Walk registration begins at 7 a.m. Cost
is $25 for adults on the day of the event.
Opening ceremony is at 8:30 a.m., with
the walk beginning at 9 a.m.

selling author Alex Kershaw will be the

Shapero Memorial Lecture sponsored

Kershaw will share his
extensive research that
led to the publication of
his most recent book,

The Envoy.
The book relates the
Raoul
compelling story of
Wallenberg
Swedish diplomat Raoul
Wallenberg who, during
the last winter of World War II, accepted
an assignment in Budapest that ultimately
enabled him to save the lives of thousands
of Hungarian Jews. Wallenberg often defied
the Nazis in face-to-face encounters during
which he demanded the return of "his Jews"
who had been rounded up and were facing
deportation to extermination camps.
The annual Mary Einstein Shapero
Memorial Lecture, established by the Hon.
Walter Shapero in memory of his late wife,
will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10,
in the Temple's Handleman Hall. Copies of
The Envoy will be available for purchase. The
event is open to the community at no charge.
