Detroit Kids Visit Meer

Residents donate supplies to 4th-graders
and share time playing games.

T

he tenants of Meer Apartments,

a facility of Jewish Senior Life,
in West Bloomfield, collected
40 bags of school supplies for the stu-
dents of Wilkins Elementary-Middle
School in Detroit. This is the second year
that Meer seniors have purchased and
donated school supplies for the children
at Wilkins.
The fourth-grade class that came to
Meer last year returned on Sept. 13 for
a games day with Meer residents.
Meer resident Rose Banider, a former
teacher, had a long conversation with
Wilkins' principal, Yvonne Stokes. "It

turns out that the principal started at the
same school in Detroit, J.R. King, where
I was the gym teacher from 1970-1981','
says Bankler.
"Mrs. Stokes told me the school has
a board that shows all of their former
teachers, and she was looking forward
to adding my name to the list. I am very
excited about it, too!"
Fran Penskar, a resident who was
instrumental in helping with the school
supply drive, said, "After doing this for two
years, I was overwhelmed at the response
from our residents, the goodness and
generosity of our people here."
