or the seniors, it was a chance
to visit the local graves of
loved ones to help set the tone
for Rosh Hashanah. For the volunteer
chaperones, Kever Avot provided the
opportunity to give back to the commu-
nity in the spirit of the High Holidays.
Kever Avot (Hebrew for "Graves of
Our Ancestors") is a program directed
by Kari Provizer of Temple Israel's
Robert Sosnick Family Life Center in
West Bloomfield. Program co-chairs
are Marc Sielger and Norm Samson.
Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield fur-
nishes financial support.
Aided by 130 volunteers, 75 seniors
from 10 Metro Detroit senior residences
were bused to 12 local cemeteries on
Sept. 24 under crisp, gray skies. Local
businesses and organizations, includ-
ing Breath of Spring Florist, Hiller's
Markets and Fleischman-Jewish Senior
Life, again offered support.
Mary Blitz, a West Bloomfield resi-
dent of Meer Apartments, took part
for the first time last year. She liked
the event so much, she returned once

more to visit the graves of her hus-
band, Louis, and parents, Ida and Max
Olshansky, at Machpelah Cemetery,
Ferndale. Like all event participants,
she could place a stone and a flower on
the cool slabs of granite marking the
gravesites and recite Kaddish.
"I was thrilled to ride the bus and
take in the whole experience said the
mother of three, grandmother of nine
and great-grandmother of 12. "It's
a tradition in my family to visit the
cemetery before the holidays. Kever
Avot makes it so much easier and
enjoyable."

of West Bloomfield and Honora
Rappaport of Bloomfield Hills, a first-
time volunteer, accompanied Mary.
Rappaport called Kever Avot "a real
mitzvah." Rosenthal said Kever Avot "is
the most rewarding thing I do."
Prepping the volunteers before the
buses left Temple Israel, Rabbi Marla
Hornsten applauded the teenagers
who had turned out as part of their
b'nai mitzvah projects. She also spoke
about "how awe-inspiring it is to see
the values of the season reflected so
passionately by all this morning." E
