Cancer Thrivers Network Focuses Solely On Women We would like to thank the Jewish News for its coverage of the Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish Women's first fundraiser, "L'Chaim! Celebrate Life, Friendship and Hope Luncheon" ("Reason for Hope Aug. 25, page 35). We also would like to praise con- tributing writer Ronelle Grier for representing the positive attitude that inspires and strengthens those of us facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. We do, however, wish to clarify the description of our membership in the last paragraph of the article. Although we hope to be able to serve all cancer survivors in our commu- nity some day, at this time our mem- bership is only open to women who have been diagnosed with cancer at any time in their lives. The Cancer Mentoring program at Jewish Family Service is currently open to men, women and children battling cancer, and their caregivers as well. The Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish Women is a grass-roots initia- tive whose mission is to enrich and empower Jewish women through activities, friendship, resources, edu- cation and humor. Our roster has grown over the past three years to include more than 220 women. We are grateful for the support we have received from the community and also from the Jewish Community Center for adopting our program. For more information, please contact any of the following event co-chairs Michelle Passon (248) 895- 2664; Sandy Schwartz (248) 851-4616 or Rita Sitron (248) 489-8985. Patti Nemer West Bloomfield Kudos For Column On Political Islam I just want to thank Robert Sklar for writing his article "Taming Terror" (Sept. 8, page 43). He made me aware of M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., and his orga- nization American Islamic Forum for Democracy. This is the best news I have seen in years on the terrifying topic of politi- cal Islam. Jasser makes it clear how being critical of political Islam is not "politically incorrect!" It's the only sane thing those who want to preserve our civil society can and must do. Kudos to Bob for his wonderful article. Ruth Moss-Katsnelson West Bloomfield 6 September 29 s 2011 theJEWISHNEWS,com F. Kevin Browett Arthur M. Horwitz Publisher I Executive Editor DETROIT JEWISH NEWS frontlines >> letters Reader Moved By Student's Account Of Polish Trip I was deeply moved by Tsiporah Davis' trip to Poland ("Holocaust Studies, Sept. 8, page. 35), where she uniquely remembered the plight of so many Polish Jews. I was encouraged to see such empathy and appreciation for the unique Polish-Jewish history that she conveyed. More Jews perished in Poland than in any other country during the Holocaust and there is truly no one left in Poland to care for these tombstones or to remember these victims. I have often visited the Warsaw Jewish cemetery and have been so saddened by the state of disrepair. I also applaud Albion College for this worthwhile biannual trip and suggest that they may wish to include Polish Holocaust survivors as guides. Thank you, Tsiporah Davis, for taking the time out of your youth and innocence to remember those who died so cruelly. Susan M. Malinowski, M.D. Daughter of Warsaw Ghetto Survivor Southfield Oak Park Mayor Thanked For Handling Of Outages I would like to take this opportunity to commend Gerald Naftaly, mayor of the city of Oak Park, for his active role, along with DTE, in monitoring the recent power outage that affected many Oak Park residents. In a statement dated and released Sept. 8, DTE noted a special thanks to Mayor Jerry Naftaly, stating that begin- ning early Sunday morning after the storm, he was very accessible to them, helping with their communication efforts as well as informing them of key city facilities that were without power. As a longtime resident of Oak Park, I personally, would like to extend a note of gratitude to Mayor Naftaly for the many hours he spends serving my city in a way no other can. He gives more of his time and effort then is expected of a mayor, including his own personal time, with very little compen- sation or thanks in return. I know I am speaking on behalf of many of my Oak Park friends and neighbors when I say "Thank You, Mayor Naftaly." Judy Kish Oak Park Correction • In "Dynamic Duo" (Sept. 22, page 14), the event honoring Mary and Norm Keane was actually titled "It's Been Keane" and was hosted by Hebrew Free Loan and Jewish Family Service, not by Federation. Also, the Keane Community Crisis Fund was established by the two hosting agen- cies, not by Federation.
