As part of an annual trek before the High Holidays. Schon, 5, and Aryeh Silverstein, 4, both of West Bloomfield Walk Of Ages 7 Young and old join to celebrate seniors and support JSL programs. he community came together on Sept. 11 at Applebaum Jewish Community Campus in West Bloomfield for the W.J. & Lillian Kemler Walk of Ages, which supports programs and services for senior adults. This year's grand marshals were Miriam and Jack Shenkman, celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary. Danny Raskin, Jewish News senior columnist, served as grand marshal emeritus. The Jewish War Veterans, Department of Michigan, rep- resenting seven posts, presented a special program to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9-11 and to honor Grandparents' Day. Many supporters, young and old, joined in the walk to support the senior adults in the community "It is always special to me to see longtime friends who come together and have made Walk of Ages a tradition these past nine years," said Geri Margolis, past president of the JSL Auxiliary. "This year it was very inspirational with the moving tribute to the victims of 9-11 presented by Rabbi Avi Shapiro and supported by the Jewish War Veterans." After the walk, participants enjoyed refresh- ments and festivities, such as a petting zoo and carnival games for children. The auxiliary provides financial support and programs and services to further enhance the quality of life for older adults; funds raised from the Mezuzah Project include a bus for the 28 September 29 • 2011 Hechtman Apartments. Jewish Senior Life provides housing to more than 900 senior adults, while also providing pro- grams and services to more than 1,800 living in the Detroit Metropolitan community. The walk was sponsored by the auxiliary and the Detroit Jewish News.
