Diverse crowd in West Bloomfield
shows support amid Abbas' U.N. bid.
n Sept. 22, as Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas
made his bid for statehood at
the United Nations, and Durban III con-
tinued the anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic
rhetoric of previous years, more than
100 people showed their support of
Israel near the corner of Orchard Lake
and Maple roads in West Bloomfield.
The street-corner rally drew a diverse
crowd, including students from Frankel
Jewish Academy and Akiva Hebrew
Day School, senior citizens, babies and
children, local politicians, rabbis from
all streams, Israelis, activists from the
sponsoring groups — and even mem-
bers of the Chai Riders motorcycle club
in their leather jackets.
Starting at 4:30 p.m. during rush
hour and ending around 6:15, partici-
pants lined Orchard Lake Road, eliciting
supportive honks from motorists.
"I love when they honk — that's
loving support:' said longtime activist
Arlene Gould of West Bloomfield.
To attract attention, participants
waved large Israeli flags and held signs
aloft; they even danced and sang songs
together. Though West Bloomfield
Police were on hand, the rally was

With the events at the U.N. serving
as a backdrop, Eugene Greenstein of
Farmington Hills, president of Zionist
Organization of America (Z0A)-
Michigan Region, explained why he and
others organized the rally.
"Everyone was attacking Israel directly
or indirectly that day; it was a good time
to say we support Israel': he said.
Sharon Lipton of Waterford, newly
elected president of the Jewish
Community Relations Council, said, "We
are here supporting Israel and the U.S. in
their efforts to restart direct negotiations
to bring peace to the Middle East."

Rabbi Shneur Silberberg, outreach
director of the nearby Bais Chabad
Torah Center, walked over to the rally
with his son Yaakov, 1.
"It's nice to get such a crowd on short
notice': he said. "There's no question
Israel is a uniting force for all factions of
the Jewish community. This is a wonder-
ful display of Jewish unity right before
the High Holidays. It's tremendous:'
