He was born in Detroit, the son of Annie and Harry Siegel. He graduated from Central High School in 1933, at age 16; he was an honor student and was all-city in baseball and hockey. He obtained an accounting degree from Walsh Institute and worked briefly as a bookkeeper at Detroit Diesel before deciding to pursue a career in professional baseball. Mr. Siegel played minor league baseball in Louisiana before serv- ing in the Army during World War II. During the war, he was in Special Services on the Army All-Star baseball team, playing exhibitions throughout the South Pacific. During this time, he frequently played against major league all-stars, includ- ing Joe DiMaggio. He also saw action in several battles, including the battle to liberate the Philippines. Mr. Siegel is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis; two sons, Howard (Barbara) Siegel of Hartford, Conn., and Ronald Siegel of Boca Raton, Fla.; and one grandchild, Adam (Kim) Siegel of Houston, Texas; and nephew, Harry Siegel of Commerce Township. He worked as a playground supervisor, hockey camp director, umpire and referee. He was an avid golfer and softball player and loved Las Vegas. He met his beloved wife, Lois, there and moved to Walnut, Calif., in the late 1970s. He worked his way up at Big 5 Sporting Goods from assistant store manager to corporate senior buyer. He later became a vice president with Modell's Sporting Goods in New York and MC Sports in Michigan. In California, he annually raised $50,000 charity for children's homes by directing a pheasant hunt. Mr. Weiss is survived by his lov- ing family: wife, Lois; daughters, Samantha (Andy) Flores, Amanda (Adam) Smith; father, Murray; sister, Allisone (Al Kaiser) Weiss; brother, Greg (Nanette) Weiss.
