it automation, robots and CAD/CAM
design equipment. Hugh Greenberg
did not want to join the blacksmiths
and buggy whip manufacturers in
the graveyard of American manufac-
turing.
"I sensed change:' he said. "I saw
(SPC) automation coming, I put
money into it. It has revolutionized
quality control."
That company investment resulted
in development of the first Windows-
based, real-time SPC software solu-
tion, WinSPC, for the Windows oper-
ating system in 1991. The software
provides statistical decision-making
at the point of production and deliv-
ers real-time, actionable informa-
tion to where it is needed most, Ned
Greenberg said.
The company and its software have
won numerous awards, including
from Microsoft, Start Magazine and
the Chinese-based website, Eworks.
DataNet was created as a d/b/a of
Detroit Gauge in 1995. Greenberg
hailed his son from Washington
because the company "needed lead-
ership on the software side."
The company continued to do
precision gauging up until 2000-01
and was "doing very well until about
2000, when most of that work was
going overseas:' Hugh Greenberg
said. "There was more future on the
software side."
So Greenberg closed the machine
tooling operation (the probe manu-
facturing division continues) and
Greenberg's second son, Daniel,
who had run that operation, left the
company for the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, where today he
is director of major gifts.
Today DataNet employs 25 people,
including a number of software
programmers and contract work-
ers. Privately owned and profitable,
it boasts clients in 2,500 facilities
worldwide in the world's larg-
est manufacturing and consumer
segments, including automotive,
electronics, food, medicine and aero-
space. "I like to say that our clients
make everything from sugar wafers
to semi-conductor wafers:' Ned
Greenberg said.
And the best may be ahead.
DataNet, after undergoing two
decades of change "to keep pace
with advances in manufacturing" is
now more powerful and useful than
ever, added Greenberg, who fore-
sees growth for the company in the
food and beverage, electronics and
consumer goods, and life sciences
sectors.
"We are still strong in aerospace
and automotive,' Ned Greenberg said.
"We are not dependent on one indus-
try, and we are strongly positioned in
Asia." Fl
