JVS: 'Planting Seeds In The New Year' T he story is told of an elderly man who plants a carob tree. "Foolish man," a passerby proclaimed, "why do you waste your time? Surely you will not live long enough to see the tree produce." The old man sighed and responded, "My father planted trees for me, and I, in turn, must plant trees for my children:' So it is for the founders and lead- ers of JVS. The seeds they planted in years past are bearing fruit today. Literally many thousands of people from all walks of life in the metro area have benefited from JVS programs and services. As JVS celebrates its 70th anniver- sary year, and we approach the New Year, we reflect upon our mission and what it means for the community: JVS helps people meet life chal- lenges affecting their self-sufficiency through counseling, training and support services in accordance with Jewish values of equal opportunity, compassion, responsibility and the steadfast belief that the best way to help people is to make it possible for them to help themselves. Man is never nearer to the Divine than in his compassionate moments. The words compassion and respon- sibility in our mission statement are core Jewish values which JVS translates into actions to benefit the Jewish community and others — spe- cifically, people with disabilities, the unemployed, students and the at-risk elderly. Every working day at JVS, countless acts of loving kindness are carried out by a dedicated staff that is fighting to maintain the same level of service to the Jewish community as we have in the past, in the face of Free High Holiday Services At Aish A ish HaTorah will provide free High Holiday services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Services will be held at Aish's Margolick Learning Center, 25725 Coolidge in Oak Park. Rosh Hashanah services on Thursday-Friday, Sept. 29-30, will include a sunrise minyan at 6:30 a.m.; a learners' service with Rabbis Alon Tolwin and Tzvi Hochstat at 9:30; a family experience with Rabbi Simcha and Estie Tolwin at 10:30; a shofar Barbara Lee Hurwitz Nurenberg Chair, JVS President and Board of CEO Trustees an ongoing economic tailspin that has far-reaching effects within our own circles; families, friends and neigh- bors have lost their livelihood, their homes and their self-respect. Through intensive career and employment and financial counseling services, we help people to regain their foothold — to make possibilities realities. Rosh Hashanah is a time for serious personal reflection. At pis, we also take stock of what the community's needs are and where we need to be to meet them. We look to see if the seeds we have planted have borne fruit; if we need to develop hybrid seeds to meet specific needs in the community; if we need to concentrate on one seedling that is struggling and requires special handling. It is a process that is ongo- ing and challenging. We hope that you will join JVS, the Federation and other Jewish commu- nity organizations in planting seeds for the future. We look to the New Year with cour- age and excitement. From the board and staff of JVS, we wish you a Shanah Tovah. May you be inscribed for a Good Year. II service at 11:30; an Apple's & Honey Kiddush at noon; and an optional adult class or Mussaf service at 12:30 p.m. The services are designed to give participants opportunities to ask questions and "get into" prayer with a deeper sense of their meanings. Additionally, Aish has set up a web- site, www.nomembershiprequired.com , for anyone, anywhere in the country who would like to attend High Holiday services and cannot afford tickets.
