David Shafer of
Okemos received
the Eagle Scout
Award on July 31.
He is a member of
Scout Troop 109
and Venture Crew
117. Shafer has
served as senior
patrol leader of his troop, was elected
to the Order of the Arrow, has served
as a governor's honor guard on
Mackinac Island and is a certified
scuba diver. His Eagle project was to
remove and replace most of the exist-
ing landscape in front of Okemos'
Community Education and
Edgewood Early Childhood Center
(formerly Edgewood Elementary).
Shafer recently graduated from
Okemos High School and will attend
the University of Michigan in the fall.
He is the son of Brad and Susan
Shafer.
West Bloomfield Township
Treasurer Teri Weingarden has
obtained her Michigan Certified
Professional Treasurer certifica-
tion through Central Michigan
University. She completed classes
over a three-consecutive-year period.
Weingarden also has her Association
of Public Treasurers Cash Handling
Certification as well as her Fire Ops
101 completion certificate. In addi-
tion to her duties as West Bloomfield
township treasurer, she serves as
Cumberland Common Subdivision
president, Relay for Life Township
Trekkers team leader, Shir Shalom
Sisterhood executive board mem-
ber and sits on the West Bloomfield
Chamber of Commerce board.
Sham Strauch Schick of suburban
Detroit has been awarded a doctorate
from Yeshiva University's graduate
school of Jewish studies. She is the
first woman to obtain a doctorate
in Talmud from the Bernard Revel
Graduate School.
Lois Pincus Cohn was honored
with a crystal rose as Outstanding
Volunteer of the Year by Hospice of
Michigan at the 26th annual Crystal
Rose Gala Sept. 16 at the Cadillac
Book Westin hotel in Detroit. Cohn
has been a consistent supporter of
Hospice of Michigan since 1986 and
has served on the organization's
board of trustees as well as being
instrumental in opening numerous
doors to new donors.
William and Irene Schumer
William and Irene Schumer, own-
ers of General Linen Uniform Service
in Detroit, received the Spirit of
Detroit Award from the Detroit City
Council in July presented by a repre-
sentative from Councilman Kenneth
Cockrel Jr.'s office. It was presented
for Community Organization of
Excellence assisting with the disen-
franchised and rebuilding lives.
Teddie Olender,
a senior at the
University of
Michigan, has
been awarded
the Essentials
of Investment
Consulting
Olender
Certificate (EIC)
by the Investment
Management Consultants Association
(IMCA). The EIC program focuses
upon fundamental knowledge of
core topics related to the investment
consulting process. Olender recently
completed a summer internship at
the Wells Fargo Advisors' Ann Arbor
office.
Glenn Ceresnie, of Ceresnie and
Offen Fur Group in Birmingham, and
Wayne Weintraub, owner of Jax Car
Wash and Kurtis Kitchens, have been
recognized for being members for
nearly all of 33 years of TradeFirst,
Michigan's oldest barter company.
Edith Covensky,
who has taught
Hebrew language,
literature and
Israeli culture,
including Israeli
film, at Wayne State
University since
Covensky
1987, has recently
published two new
bilingual books of poetry: On the
Existence of Love and Poetics. She
is also the American editor of the
Israeli literary journal Pseifas.
