He later suffered cardiac arrest in the therapy room. "My private nurse saved my life by performing CPR',' he says. "I received excellent care during five more weeks in the hospital — and I'm very grateful!' As a result, Weisberg, 85, and his wife, Henrietta, 82, have made a $1.5 million gift to the Beaumont Health System to establish the Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg Center for Acute Care of the Elderly at Beaumont, which is the third largest Medicare hospital in the nation. The gift will support construction and program development for the cen- ter, including the Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg Day Room. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2012, and the center is expected to open six months later. "We're delighted to be associated with Beaumont:' Weisberg said. "They saved my life, and we're pleased to fund a specialized center for seniors!' "We're extremely grateful for this generous gift from the Weisbergs," said Gene Michalski, Beaumont Health System president and CEO. "Their support will help provide our commu- nity's growing elderly population with specialized care tailored specifically to their needs!' The center will be on the ninth floor of the hospital's North Tower and focus on the most vulnerable older adult patients, including those with delirium or dementia and those at increased risk of falls. The gift also covers educational enrichment and specialized training for nurses who will staff the new cen- ter, allowing them to achieve certifica- tion in gerontological nursing. In addition, the Weisbergs' gift will establish an endowment for geriatric education and research for new treat- ments, diagnostic tools and disease prevention. The Weisbergs have a long record of philanthropy, contributing to 50 major charities, including Congregation Shaarey Zedek, where they co-sponsor concerts and other musical events. The Weisberg family has belonged there for 70 years. The family operated the Chatham supermarket chain in the Detroit area for many years. With the cooperation of the cit- ies of Detroit and Hamtramck, and the continuing support of General Motors Corp., Beth Olam Cemetery has retained the dignity and spiri- tuality of the founders of the Jewish Community of Detroit. Beth Olam is located on the site of the General Motors Cadillac (Poletown) Plant. Entrance to the cemetery is through the truck gate, and the plant security will assist visi- tors in locating the cemetery site.
